There’s a teammate who recently got promoted to sde2. The thing with him is that he works a lot. By a lot I mean works 12hours a day and even on weekends. Has not taken a single day off since the last 6months and is always working. He produces good quality work, no can complain about that but because of him the team is just taking on more and more work with unrealistic deadlines, if he was not on the team. And at certain point, my manager has even started to compare his output with the rest of the team’s output(number of points completed each sprint). The guy takes on the “lead” role on every projects the team is working on, he gets the most exposure to external teams because he is always available and single handedly sways design decisions in review meetings because he is very outspoken as well. How does one work with such a teammate?
Switch teams
By finding a team where you can do the same by putting in 8 hours a weekday of effort
What about you start working?
I mean, if you get compared to someone who works 12 hours a day and weekends. It's always gonna look like you need to "start working."
Exactly OP - plenty of teams where you can have good impact without habitually working 70-80 hours a week. Don’t listen to the bitters. Just go look for one.
You slowly wilt away, underneath this man’s glory. Or transfer team / job.
Get good? Sounds like they're just really passionate and good at their job. If you want to compete, then compete, if you don't, then don't. Set boundaries on your own work, push back on unrealistic timelines or workloads, and if all else fails then leave. How am I supposed to live laugh love when Elon musk works so hard? ~ OP
Second this.
Help him excel even more so he will get more promotions and eventually gonna leave the team for a better opportunity. Your problem is solved.
Give him a kid.
Just be friendly to him. He will be your boss soon.
Nah... the reward for out producing everyone is more work, not a promotion. Conning others into doing your work for you and kissing ass is how to get promoted.
You sound jealous
I think the team member is awesome except for working 12 hours and making others look bad for it. Realistically the average work day should be about 8 hours, and at MSFT it seems to be 6. 12 + weekends is obscene if consistent
