Planning to move to Austin for some family reason. How’s life there? TC is 257k and rent budget around 2.5k. Married and have a toddler. Would love to hear pros/cons.
Pros: no state income tax, money goes a long way, mcol, breakfast tacos, BBQ, high speed limits Cons: hot, Texas power grid, it's Texas still
What’s bad about Texas power grid?
Potentially not having power for days during freezing climate conditions could be bad
is the heat good for the baby tho
Yes, if it’s cold
Do you leave your baby unattended outside for long intervals? Then no
A lot of people are moving here still. Stressing some resources and services. Drought. Heat. But I’ve been here 20+ years and not moving yet.
How’s housing nowadays? I heard it’s pretty bad now.
Looking a lot better.. still higher than 2019 but coming down quick
Still one of the best cities in America, as others have mentioned rents are going down, a lot. You can get a 1br downtown for ~$1500 (Riverside). New bars and things to do being built everyday, restaurant scene is quickly growing, honestly I'd even say prices out have decreased a bit in the past couple months. You get used to the heat after one summer..
Riverside is an option, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for families. But yes, definitely the sweet spot of cheap and close to downtown
Riverside has a lot of homeless and there’s constantly ppl shooting and robbing people in that area that’s why it’s cheap
How are the schools in Austin?
Schools in good neighborhoods are excellent. Schools in bad neighborhoods are poor. People with money either buy a home in a good neighborhood or send their kids to private school.
Some of the best in the country. Lookup Eanes ISD which is top 10 in the US.
Well read it yourself on r/Austin Last week people were competing who had longest power cut. 30K+ people had power cut of 130hr+
I think it was waaaaay more than 30k ppl.
In TX power cuts when it's cold. In CA power cuts when it's hot and fires are burning. It's crap when it happens and then you move on.
Very bad. Cars get broken into all the time
I mean... not nearly as bad as any costal city. Plus, you're actually allowed to defend yourself in Texas from theft like this
I mean it’s hard to defend yourself when you are sleeping in your house or busy doing work like what ?! 😂😂😂
Where are you moving from?
We moved here from SF 2.5 years ago and love it. Easy going and chill, friendly people, lots of music and culture, very good restaurants and fun nightlife, pretty nature around that is easily accessible, good schools, and it’s safe. Negatives are few international flights from the airport, extremely hot summers, cedar fever if you have it, and that you’re in Texas lol. We love it, but it’s not for everyone.
Please don't vote the same way that ended up totally ruining SF causing it to go from a fine city to the laughing stock of the entire world...
I’m non-partisan. Not voting for anyone who let’s people rot on the streets and hope it goes away, and neither for anyone who thinks that a pregnant minor who got raped should keep the baby. ✌️
Rents are dropping, you’ll be happy if you like small shops, music, bars, clubs etc
Thanks, how’s food there?
Food is good, especially if you like meat. For other cuisines I think houston is better
