PM Manager, early 40s, married and ENM (Ethical Non Monogamous) AMA
Got an offer for IC4, remote (not CA), 225k base + 387k stock over 4 yrs + 15k sign on bonus. Is this a good offer? It is firm. I am unsure about making the switch, because I make slightly more now and have good WLB. I also can travel freely and work from my laptop. In general, how is the work life balance at Nvidia? I feel a little intimidated by Nvidia and have this feeling that I'm not a strong engineer compared to the peers. Any insight welcome on what its like. Thanks. YOE 8 years.
Why would you go there for less $$ and potentially worse WLB
I'm a bit caught up in the prestige of Nvidia, have wanted to work there a long time. I also am not sure if I have a future with my current company (a startup).
Don't get caught up with prestige of the company. Unless your direct team / manager is world-renowned, I would think twice.
Nvidia is a good company. WLB is ok, but it has attracted high performers recently because of the incredible stock performance so you might see lots of competition.
Can you nego higher stock? That could be profitable long term
Level and current tc at msft?
Not at msft anymore, but I left at level 63 and TC of maybe 250k? But currently at a startup plus some consulting, which gave me 330k this year. But may not be sustainable, its been a grind.
I'll be honest... If you're just coming for the "prestige", we don't want you. WLB is good, but performance is expected. If you're not interested in the tech, and don't want to drive, you should be intimidated because you'll be the least among your peers. That is all worded harsh, but I want to drive home the reality that most NVIDIANs are "drinking the Kool aid" and that's what makes it all work... people are deeply invested in THEIR work. If you're just coming to ride the prestige rocket... Please don't, it won't be good for us or you.
Thanks, good perspective.
To be clear, am def interested in the tech -- for my specific field, this is some of the most innovative work around.
Hi Op. What would you be gaining by joining Nvidia? Will this switch benefit you in any way?
A few benefits I can see: - learning new skills, with a high quality - working in a product that will (hopefully) have a positive impact to an industry vertical - maybe some publication / research opportunities - some nice benefits/Perks (which i don't have now. 401k match, espp, etc) - some additional clout to my resume, though I don't know if I want or need it at this point Additionally, I am working for a start up (which I love), but may not have a future with them. They are more like a family business, and I am seeing that equity and leadership may not be in the cards for me there. What I really want is to build something of value and to be involved in growing it and taking it to market, as well as building. If not this start up, eventually I'd like to be a foundational member of a small and innovative company in my niche. So this opportunity with Nvidia also represents for me a more open ended future, and doors opening down the line (though I don't know yet what they will be).
Thank you. Op, I believe you already know what you should do next, and it is not Nvidia…You have the right mindset and the spirit to go on your own. Good luck!
Great offer. You will have to work hard to keep that tho
That offer is maxed, may be able to negotiate higher sign on. WLB kind of sucks, and Jensen is an asshole. You might not end up interacting with him but if your management does at all you might end feeling it because shit rolls downhill. He's all up in everyone's work lately, especially in DC and Omni. It's stable, though, because he's averse to layoffs. If you DM me the hiring manager I can tell you if it's a good org or not. You can still travel, etc. I'm designated to be in the office and I don't even have a desk. I work exclusively from home and I'm in the office at HQ more than my local office.
That’s a pretty decent offer. Maybe a little on the low side for base salary, but overall not something to turn your nose up at. I know for a fact you can get at least 10k more than that base.
What role? I feel like sign on could be more
This is a software role for one of the omniverse type teams
Engineering or wwfo?
