Got laid off and wondering if I should return to Australia. Just started speaking with companies and one told me today that they get lots of applications, the market for employees is tight. I also noticed that the permanent salaries haven't budged since 2-3 years ago.
No the whole country is corrupt, try to stay in the us
The irony in this comment 😭 I live in aus, you clearly have no idea what you are talking about. Australia = 13th least corrupt country in the world, USA 24th.
In the US there are more big players and a common value of merit/democracy. In Australia there are a few billionaires from criminal histories that can do whatever they want. Big fish, little pond. In Australia it’s much easier to be harassed by a rich person or politician because they know you have no connections
Market is tight, inflation rising and layoffs are impacting local market also and most of the big tech companies have local hiring freezes. Lots of local companies still hiring though - depends on what job you are looking for and what your expectations of package are.
Was the comment in the first paragraph about the market tight, layoffs about Australia or the USA?
Australia - job market is tight i.e. more people looking for jobs than jobs available
Bad.
Nope, same deal as US and UK… tech is in the shitter and recession is forecasted this year. Unless you can score a job in mining… or gov.
There are a couple of smaller local software companies that are hiring but the TC is appalling, in that there's no TC: just base salary. No bonus!
Massive layoffs
Have your tried Cashapp/Afterpay Melbourne?
There are fewer jobs out there than compared to 1 yr ago. If you're not selective and willing to be flexible, many are still looking for engineers. Im still seeing 150K+ jobs email flowing through Seek, but again, what are you looking for and where are you looking for? Looks as if the peak of the salary band has gone up significantly (e.g. 200k+ for a lot of senior roles) when senior roles were definitely paying around $150 about 3-4 yrs ago and very rare to see $200k over jobs. Realistically you're looking at around 150k for a senior developer job, and may be 170+ if you're in Syd or Melb. However, I doubt the problem is the job/salary, hosing is crap at the moment and renting will be a challenge, if you don't have history or want to pay a lot for a shoe box unit.
Plenty of jobs, virtually zero at the TC/challenge/scale level of Meta. Average TC 150-200 at absolute best, 0.66 AUD = 1 USD, do the math.
This.
Few good jobs. A lot of boring, crap start-ups. Layoffs. Not much of a difference since 2 years ago.
