First of all, I agree that Google is not what Google used to be. It is not THE company anymore. However, looking at how Google is doing these days trying to regain the dominance of AI, it makes me think Google finally realized that they can't just sit in mountain view office, dropping some ML papers, but not monetizing or making product with it. Look how they released Gemini 1.5 pro just a week after Gemini 1.0 Ultra. The training time for Gemini 1.5 pro is very short, and I believe it's thanks to their own TPU chips and infra. They do not have to rely on Nvidia H100 to train LLMs and save tons of money and time from it too. Many AI startups are using GCP as their cloud. TPU performance and perf/TCO will get much better in a couple of years and the effort to run ML models on TPU will also be smoother with the development of XLA and framework. More AI startups will use GCP as their cloud service and its market share will increase soon. It's gonna be the most important business to Google next to the search engine Ad. Its cloud market share is increasing. I've used all AWS, Azure, and GCP. AWS is good and they have all the features that users need. But the problem is you can't find it. Their AI chips can't compete with TPU. Azure is... The only advantage of Azure is that they are responsive. Overall, GCP was the best. I do not need fancy features that AWS supported. Its ad revenue is recovering. Meta is doing great recently. They increased digital ad market share and also saved money through layoff. If Google continues more layoff especially those manager-level employees who get tons of Google RSUs, their income will also increase just like Meta. Ad is very economy-sensitive business. As interest rate goes down starting mid/late this year, it the ad revenue will grow rapidly. As AI, GCP, and TPU makes a synergy and AD revenue grows this year, Google is gonna definitely regain the power. Google is the cheapest stock among mag 7 at the moment. I'm gonna all in GOOG now. What do you think? TC: 370k
Gemini says it can't set reminder lol
I saw that too lol. Gemini needs to be refined. I wanna give more time to Google, though. It's been just a week since they released it, and they are very communicative on X.
They replaced assistant and it can't set reminders!!
I think the big tech company that makes its own silicon is going to eventually win the AI race. π€·ββοΈ
Isn't that NVIDIA?
H100 is great. It's too expensive though.
Dunno if Gemini will be able to win the race! I kinda like ChatGPT! Also G search is deteriorating
Google has a terrible culture for building products that last. Itβs not going to make it unless they turn all the coasters to real employees
Nvidia data center may have stole many clients from these cloud companies in the AI frenzy last year. Itβs very likely that AWS AI, vertex AI and azure AI grow very little and the AI customers go directly to Nvidia.
It is a pain to use TPU. Not sure if XLA alone can solve everything
I had no problem running JAX/Tensorflow on TPU. Pytorch was also not too bad. The only time I struggled was when I used Pytorch Lightning. Also, if you use ML models from Huggingface, it should be straightforward. But I agree that when you are developing your own model with custom layers, it is more work than writing cuda (or you might not even be able to run it).
