Graduated from VJTI Mumbai with a bachelors in CS, worked at Samsung Research Bangalore for 2.5 years and filed for 2 patents, 325/340 on GRE with a perfect score on quant, came to ASU for an MCS in Fall 2023, solved 450+ leetcode problems with a good mix of topics and difficulties while enjoying doing those, solving 3-4 problems per contest and STILL NO INTERNSHIP. What am I doing wrong? #engineering #software #swe #internship
Take an unpaid internship with a professor at ASU
We come from a background that teaches US do X and get Y. But the world has changed pretty much in the last few yrs.. No one is entitled to any job.. It's how they wade thru to reach that job and prove themselves at the interview and later at the job. U need something, u really need to keep searching with all ur might. Secondly also rethink ur needs.. things like slightly different streams, or if u can u try entrepreneurship instead?
You do make sense and I agree with you. And yes, I'm quite flexible with the roles but it seems like the current mark demands extremely specific requirements. Entrepreneurship, yes that's what I have been working on parallelly. Have a couple of ideas and have been studying and learning trying to bring it to fruition.
You are right the market is really bad right now.. the best thing to do right now is prepare (learn new/related topics, , practice mocks etc ) so well that when jobs rebound, ur profile will be among the strongest. All the best.
Welcome. Competing in big tech means everyone has a similar or a better record. You aren’t doing anything wrong, it’s just adjusting to going from a big fish in a pond to a regular fish in the ocean. Do you have a good git repo ? Significant contributions ?
Can you read the following sentence: "No more than one unmarketable tomato"? Send me a rec of it and I can tell you with high probability what's the problem
You didn't do anything wrong. But you gotta understand there are many profiles with exact same credentials. So it's pretty much a matter of luck, when your profile gets picked by a recruiter On a side note stop doing what others told you. Start thinking what you want to do and then do it. Even on job, if you just do what others tell you then it is not going to be tricky to get promoted.
Other than being from a non-target school: ASU, you’re probably doing everything right. The job market does suck right now for new grads, so take any opportunity you can get and switch once you have more experience.
I believe I came across your resume and I agree you are well-qualified and doing everything right. Unfortunately we had to go with a candidate who fit a very specific project need, otherwise you would have had a strong chance of getting the internship. I realize it's not much of a consolation, however. Budget situation at Samsung is rather tight and internship hiring is very restricted compared to past years. The job market was similar for me when I was finishing my MSEE around 2011 and my prospects were limited. So as others have said, just bad timing. And don't give up!
I should John Doe my resume. Good suggestion.
Because tech is famous for its lack of Indians 🙄
