Even 10 years into my career I spend my weekends in coffee shops doing sort of supplemental/remedial skilling to stay competitive or at least relevant. That is the God-honest and depressing truth.
It’s the challenge and the joy. If you don’t like constantly learning new stuff you might want to think about a different field of work.
This is exactly why I like software engineering tho lol.
can u tell ur manager that it’s new to u and do the supplemental stuff during weekdays?
That’s the game! Also curious, what kind of extra skills you built?
I am doing this 20 years into my career. This is life in tech. I have ex colleagues who started in the late 90s at large companies that are in the exact same team even today. This is one year of learning repeated 20 times. They have a cushy life. They work 25-30 hours a week and have fun. A lot of these people are okay as long as as they have their jobs at the old big tech companies but are screwed in the event of a layoff. Essentially one layoff away from forced retirement.
That assumes people cant learn new skilset. I have changed careers two times. They will have downtime but can figure it out
Some may. Most don’t. I can’t tell you the number of careers cut short in late 40s/ early 50s.
It is actively developed, what do you expect? There are millions of people contributing ever so slightly. You need to pick your battles wisely. You cant learn everything. Pick a niche and master it
You picked the wrong field if you don't like that. I think of it as an innovative field tgat rewards self learners. That is actually what attracted me to this industry
A lot of industries require CE… at least ours isnt official
That’s one of the reason you are paid the big bucks
Well you can always go be a barista if you don't like continuous learning but chances are you need to up your latte skills there too lol. All competitive fields require keeping up to date. Imagine a lawyer or doctor stuck to the teachings of 1980.
And the barista will likely be working in the same coffee shop op is upskilling at.
The barista may own the shop
