Google FB Uber (ATG) Cruise (Passed on-site but was rejected during team matching. Recruiter botched interview role) Lyft (Level 5) Airbnb Confluent Having gotten an offer at Uber a year ago I really thought I would have a chance at getting an offer again. I passed all of my phone screens with 100% success. I studied for two months with a whiteboard in my room. Watched several videos on system design. Completed almost 300 LC. Ultimately I think my background wasn’t a great fit or I would botch one of the coding/system design questions. It’s generally hard for me to architect high scale web services on the spot with my background in low scale data center distributed systems.
Prepare whiteboarding and cultural questions next time.
Sorry to hear that! You sounds well prepared. Mind if I dm you for some questions?
Go for it.
How many Ethernet cables can I plug into your big switch?
As many as the min wage a driver makes at Uber. Oh shoot, that’s not much.
I just googled. Uber does not pay drivers wages (aka w2)
Wanna try Amazon? DM me :)
I had recruiters reach out and I turned them down. Unfortunately I have no desire to work at Amazon. I’m most interested in helping to make self driving cars a reality. Thanks for the offer tho.
Makes sense, I’m about to try my startup but wanna leave the team in good shape. We just got a new project and growing slow
Wait for 6 more months. Prepare some more and try those 7 again. Time is on your side and good luck !
Thanks!
Thank you! FWIW the cruise process felt the most practical and enjoyable out of all the processes I went through. I was told to circle back in 4-6 months and I will.
Are you still trying in other companies like msft, netflix, LinkedIn, waymo, zoox, etc?
I would like to work on something I give a shit about so that rules out a lot of companies. Never used Netflix, don’t use msft products, really hate LinkedIn lol. I wasn’t able to find a role at Waymo that matched my skill set. They misty had computer vision or hardware heavy roles. I’d have to look into Zoox, I honestly don’t know anything about them.
I think you should keep trying all self driving companies. Zoox sounds cool.
I will look into Zoox thanks!
Why did you turn down uber?
My company gave me a heavy counter offer that was 50K more than what would be my salary at Uber. It was a good short term move but probably a poor long term move given Uber’s upcoming IPO. Hindsight 20/20.
Sounds like an Ian Goodfellow in the making. Your motivation is awesome op.
Says nothing about you, except your awesome skills don’t overlap with generic white board coding. Though if you come to us, we will make you write some on a white board too.
Thanks
