I’m a SWE with 1.5 years of experience. I’m thinking of applying for a full time MBA program (shooting for any M7 school) with the intention of pivoting to consulting. Current/former consultants, how is consulting as a career? I’ve seen that the FAANG equivalent of consulting are McKinsey, BCG and Bain. Is it easier to get into these programs as compared to say FAANG? Also, if I got an MBA and didn’t get into a strong consulting company, I could always come back to tech as a PM, no? TC: 180k
Become a product/program/project manager.. wile out.. talk shiii.. tech TC.. no coding. Don't be a victim of politics.. be the politics. ✊😂
Be the politics 😂😂. We’re together like butt cheeks 😂
Go for it, MBB is pretty good and very interesting career, also you can come back to tech as PM if you want
I've heard consulting has super awful WLB, especially when you land the big names. You're probably just trading one form of bs for another but now spend most of your time alone in hotel rooms building slide decks.
MBB isn’t as easy to break into as you might think. Reason being is that its only 3 firms and as with any recruiting process, things can be a crapshoot. Its very unlike tech where working at google meta apple netflix stripe databricks roblox uber linkedin nuro doordash etc etc etc are equivalent. Also, 1.5 yoe is way too low. Very doubtful you’ll get into M7 with that low work experience and even if you do, MBB won’t give you interviews
I’m not applying immediately. I still need to prepare for the GMAT, essays, letters of recommendation etc and OF COURSE I’ll only apply when I hit 3 years of experience. I’ll want to enroll in 2025 and I’ll have 3.5 years of experience to start on the Fall. For that, I need to start doing the preparation to get solid scores + extracurriculars etc in order. Also, I’m not only targeting MBB. I’m open to IB as well and like I said, an MBA can get me a PM gig too if it doesn’t work out.
Do you hate SWE or your Jira tickets at Microsoft?
Far from it. I enjoy it BUT I DON’T WANT TO DO IT FOR MONEY BECAUSE THEN I HAVE TO DO IT 24/7.
Are you sure all SWE jobs are gonna need you do it 24/7?
It might be different rest room but the same shit

Totally get where you're coming from. From what I've heard, consulting can be a refreshing change from the grind of SWE roles. And yeah, MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) are definitely the FAANG of the consulting world. Just curious, any insights from your time as an SWE that have shaped your decision to pivot to consulting? Are there specific trends or experiences at Microsoft that have made you tired?
For me it’s the constant politics
Then try switching companies first. I have been a dev for 15 years. If I let my Roblox experience define SWE, I would have left this industry a long time ago, as it is the absolute sh1tiest company around. Luckily, I had 14 years of real companies to work at so I understood how fun it is
