HM asked my salary expectation and I said 130k. The range for the role is up to 167k Is it possible to negotiate in later stages? This was the first round.
First person to give a number loses. You ALWAYS answer this question with a question and inquire about the range. Your response then should always be “I believe that fits in with my expectations and we can finalize the numbers as we move further in the process.”
What if they give no range and say they take into account xyz and insist on range?
Then you say you aren't comfortable giving a number until you have had a chance to understand the scope of the role fully.
Yes you can and should still negotiate but you put yourself in a bind. Wait for the offer then own it - sorry , I know I said 130. I didn’t know my worth then. I did some research. The good news is I’m still interested in this role. My salary expectation is 165 (or whatever).
I can try that. Would bringing up that I got a raise in my current role be any helpful?
Saying you got a raise all of a sudden can come out sounding fake in some cases. Rather say that you were not ready for the question during HM round. But have since gone back to the drawing board, worked out your expenses, discussed with your partner, etc and here's the new number.
It’s not about your current pay. It’s about your worth to the new company.
After you complete a few rounds of interviews explain that you have a better understanding of the job and how your skills map. Then give them your updated salary expectations
This works for me every time
Look at the total package. Point out deficiencies in PTO, benefits, etc that would require you to make more to compensate. May not always get more base, but might be able to up your PTO, or your annual bonus percentage, etc. I've taken to giving them a range when I have to, assuming benefits are comparable to what I'm used to. I've twice now had them provide me a copy of the benefits package during the first round of interviews by doing that. Makes actual negotiating in the second round easier because I know what their benefits look like. First time I got a 3k bump and a 10k signing bonus (from nothing). 2nd time I got a 16k bump, 2k annual bonus bump and a 50k bump in signing bonus
Does Disney negotiate on PTO and annual bonus. I've never seen that done anywhere, it's usually a blanket policy by years with company and a % by level respectively. Always been limited to base, stock, and signon negotiation.
Same
Personally, I have done this by saying I have an offer already which is paying this much. But it was after the final round.
Tell them 130 was assuming X amount of stocks and bonus for a total of Y TC. Then say, since you’re only offering Z TC, we need to make some adjustments.
I wish blind would bubble stuff up to the top. This is the best answer : Salary != TC The risk is that you've given them a salary, and they've set up an interview loop to match. If you came to Indeed and said you're looking for $500k, they'd say "Ah we have a Principal Engineer candidate" and your loop would reflect that. If you're more of a Senior Engineer? You'll get wrecked: those higher level interviews are a lot tougher to skate by with leetcode (I give some of them, think about 300 candidates, with a handful who have demonstrated principal level skills. I've read feedback for the rest)
In your case, the risk is that they'll give you a junior loop, and that you won't be able to show your chops.
I had an interview for my second job with 1yoe where they asked me my salary expectations and I said 130k, after going through a bunch of interviews my best offer ended up being $210k from Twitter. Called up the company to tell them I wouldn’t take it and that the offer was too low and they immediately bumped me to $160k, I didn’t even tell them what my other offer was just that I had better. Obviously it’s different if they know you have other offers but you’re not necessarily stuck with the number you gave.
Yes. You can negotiate later on and let them know you have another "made up" offer
Upper bounds of the range usually are for decoration or you’re basically close to the next level
