I see many big companies offering remote, is this viable career or is onsite significantly better?

Currently working in Midwest and have to come into the office 3x a week. My wife is looking for dental residencies in California, but the system sucks in that she has to apply to many but can only be ‘matched’ with one. I’d love to work in Bay Area but there are only like 5-6 residencies there, the majority of them are sprinkled around different parts of SoCal. Due to this upcoming move I am thinking of applying to new jobs, but can’t completely bank on a Bay Area job as I may be stuck in SoCal for a year. Is it easily possible to work a remote job and make Silicon Valley salaries if I’m located in the state of California? Would a traditional ‘onsite’ job be ok with me coming in once a week if I’m in SoCal and drive to Bay Area? Would it be more worthwhile for me to work in Bay Area and pay rent for a year for a separate living situation for my wife? Not sure what is best plan here for next job to maximize money in, looking for advice. TC: 140k

AFAIK if you are not in Bay Area it’s hard to make Bay Area salary. The company would have a pay adjustment knowing you don’t live in the Bay Area

How significant is the adjustment?

It totally depends on the company and yoe I guess. If you’re a senior senior, you might be able to negotiate. But normally you could be a difference of 10-20% from Bay Area to SoCal.

To follow up on this, what should I set my location on LinkedIn when searching for jobs? Los Angeles (even if it may be some distant SoCal suburb)? SFBA? Keep it with just United States?
