(I posted this on LinkedIn for 5 min but deleted it) Halp
LMAO
I feel the same way (Northern Virginia/DC area) at least Michigan is more affordable
Amazon pays 300k+, in NOVA. But it’s a shit show of course.
Amazon has been picking up hiring in Detroit since they don’t have to offer as big of wages as the west coast bc the auto companies pay disgustingly low lol
I grew up in Michigan and bailed as soon as I could. It’s a terrible state.
I left when I turned 18 to go to community college in Seattle but then came back to finish getting a bachelor’s at umich bc I got in state tuition. Then I started at ford after college to pay back student loans and haven’t escaped since. Sunnova was full remote, and I lost the job 6 months ago. I’m living in my mom’s basement right now without a car and it’s awful. I want to relocate to a different city at this point since I’m debt free, but I want to find one that isn’t built so much around the automobile. Which is much more of a struggle than I realized. Most recruiters are asking me to work out of metro Detroit suburbs, but none of the offices are connected to public transit at all, so it doesn’t even make sense for me to work out of any of the cities except Troy, Detroit, or Auburn hills. I’m kicking myself for turning down recruiters who I didn’t feel were offering me enough money in cities like Seattle right when I got fired. Like one was offering me $130k + relocation costs and I turned it down uhhhg. My goal cities right now nyc, Boston, DC, Atlanta, Miami, or honestly I want to get tf out of the US all together and ultimately my goal is to relocate to Germany. But need more money before that jump
I live in Texas and life is superior. Great jobs and relatively low cost of living. Good luck, you’ll come out on top — blind is a great first step!!
That's why I moved from OH a few years ago. You have to join Big4 advisory to get any decent wages, but then you have to travel and be a consultant. Moving to rural CA wasn't much of an adjustment and life out here is just better with the choice to be around snow.
Uhg yes. I want to get into consulting or the big 4 so bad. All of the big 4 except kpmg have had recruiters reach out to me but the interviews never lead to offers. I’ve also applied to the MBBs and got callbacks on my resume from Bain and bcg but not McKinsey… But…. I’ve also made a bit of a name for myself on the app called fishbowl in the “all things mbb bowl”, and I upset a lot of the mbb employees bc I got in so many fights with them. If u go to the bowl and look up mobile developer their threads with me come up lol. I’m banned from fishbowl right now tho bc I made a post about how when I worked at ford one time i learned that Henry ford and hitler were pals and it freaked me out. I wanted to see if others worked at workplaces with questionable pasts, bc I really struggled with that. Still kinda do. The auto companies do fucked up shit during times of political turbulence like we’re in now and essentially turn into full blown weapons manufacturers. Which is one of the main reasons I don’t want to work for them now. Also essentially am black listed from ford atm bc I upset so many people while I was there
If you live rural, there’s a lot cheaper places than CA
Such a typical Michigander. Always complaining about the weather and how they want to leave so bad, but never do. If you want to leave, then do it. Context: born and raised in MI, but one of the few to leave
Typical Michigander who moved out of Michigan acting like they’re better than others still in the state bc they’re “one of the few that left”. —if u were a bit more observant on this post you’d see I already have left to move to Seattle (lived there for 2.5 years) before but came back for school. Now I’m trying to leave again. It’s not like I don’t have recruiters weekly asking me to relocate to Texas lol. I want to live in desirable areas tho. Not y’all-qaeda land
Maybe the problem is you, op

— is a country trapping its youth with debt, relies on wars to provide gdp growth, and wages haven’t kept pace with inflation since wwii
Escapee here, let me know if I can help with a referral
Maybe. I’ve interviewed with Amazon and had many of their recruiters reach out. The Amazon interview process is an absolute dumpster fire in my experience. Some roles use tests in coding languages not relevant to the role at all, others don’t require them, and even when I get rejected I still have more Amazon recruiters reaching out to me in the “6 month no interview” time, which I only learn about once the recruiters look me up in their systems after they’ve wasted more of my time with intro calls and LinkedIn messages. —sorry I appreciate the offer and sound jaded
lol I’ve got no misconceptions about what Amazon is like. I’m also on the product side so less helpful for SDE interviews
