Hey guys, I’m currently interning (not HubSpot, that’s my former employer). It’s a 12 week internship. I started 2 weeks ago and so far it has been a horrible experience compared to my previous interns. Currently it’s the start of my 3rd week and so far there has been: - no onboarding process - no environmental setup - no tasks ready (had to ask my manager for some) - my manager still hasn’t done any 1:1 meetings - doesn’t slack me - I have no idea what I’m working on (no one explained anything) Today I was given my ‘first task’ (after asking) and there was no description on the ticket whatsoever, we hopped on zoom to discuss it but they just assigned me the Jira issue and didn’t explain anything such as what repo its for, how to run it, what things I need, what file I’m working on, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING except for the jira ticket title Should I quit? Do I just reach out to HR to quit or how does it work? What would you guys do in this situation?? and to make it worse, they’re paying me 🥜 #engineering #software #swe #quit #quitting #intern #internship
Name and shame.
I'm pretty sure no one is expecting much out of an internship. Talk to your manager and have it resolved professionally. It doesn't sound like it's a toxic with environment or anything. Sounds like it's just a job, albeit a bit more disfunctional. Unless you have another internship or job lined up, just suck it up for a few more weeks. At least you'll get to put it on your resume.
I agree the work environment isn’t toxic at all, the people are nice but it’s just very dysfunctional, you would expect to onboard an intern more professional and have work ready but absolutely Zero
Shhh just pretend to get some things done and get paid
Which company is this ?? Just stick it out and don’t return after this is done
Sounds like SoFi’s onboarding.
💀💀💀
Lesson learned don't intern for no name companies. They just see interns as cheap labor and have no idea how to actually support them.
The company is huge, and we’ll known. 10k+ employees, UNICORN 🦄
It’s 10 weeks. Suck it up. File it under life experiences you don’t want to repeat.
You could stalk your team's older commits in version control to try to figure out wtf is going on. You can do a lot without much support.
I normally do this and I go above and beyond to understand what’s going on but in this case, it’s hard to do anything when you got exposure to nothing 😭
Ya that's understandable :(
I basically was in this experience for my first internship. I just stuck it out because I didn't have anything else lined up. My advice is this - If you have questions that you cannot find the solution for on your own you need to ask them. Find the people who will answer your questions and ask them the questions. Some companies don't put a ton of resources towards developing their interns, so it's on you to "develop" yourself with what you are given. Ask your questions so that you can start working towards getting better.
Same type of shit happens to Full Time employees too (no onboarding, no mentoring, nothing organized, etc) welcome to the real world. You have 2 choices and you will learn something from any of them: 1) relax and get paid and see what happens at the end. 2) try to escalate to your boss in an effort to make internship meaningful, but be careful with what you wish.

Sure. Quit if you have something lined up.
