After my MBA, I am have two job offers in hand with the same compensation, IBM and Amazon, Anyone would prefer Amazon but given the toxic culture and less work life balance, which one would people prefer? IBM has a great culture , good WLB and I like the role of Analytics/strategy. Additionally, if I choose Amazon I will have to move to Seattle which I have some resistance to as I live in NYC area and IBM job location is here itself. Please suggest. TC : 180K
Thank you and makes sense. Also, do you know if location is negotiable at Amazon to work from NYC? For a PM role?
For IBM do you mean the strategy team that sits in fidi or the "Market Development & Insights" team? MD&I reports into CAO, is in NYC, and hires MBAs as well which is why I ask - didn't realize the strategy team reported to CAO. I wouldn't do MD&I but I'll assume you're talking about the fidi team. I didn't work with the strategy folks much (I was an IBM OM in NYC for a few years) but had some classmates go there and they seem happy. I think you work directly with GMs so that's pretty cool. A few suggestions: - Ask someone, maybe a peer, about layoffs (called RAs / Resource Actions at IBM). How often is this team hit? Some teams got decimated in the last month or two so to me it's a legit question. Layoffs are 2-4x a year. But that's a small team working directly with execs so could just be safe. - Contact people who use to be on that team and have MBAs. Most people w/ FT MBAs at IBM are really friendly and helpful with each other b/c there are so few of us. - Think about or talk to people about what it's like to work at a company trying to turn around / failing. It's very different from a growth company. People are stressed, scared, and angry. Half the company is job hunting. They get re-orged every 4 months and have no sense of stability. I had 3 managers in 1 year once. I was only on two teams but somehow was in 6 business units. All of this uncertainty, lack of resources, lack of bonuses, messy direction breeds toxic managers and poor, short-term strategy. I think you don't cry as much as Amazon people do but I mean...that doesn't mean you don't. Of course in any crisis there is opportunity. I imagine the strategy team is trying to literally change all this. Maybe they're also out of the fray - I'm not really sure. Having no revenue requirements might make it alright. 180 is great for post MBA in NYC @IBM. I assume Band 8? Congrats on the offer.
Thanks great insights and suggestions, I got an offer as Senior Strategy Consultant- Chief Analytics Office ( actually in Armonk, NY). I guess most of the people here are MBA grads and seem to be very helpful and inclusive through out the recruiting process. You are right about the challenging times at IBM but talking to CAO teams and CAO itself, it all sounded like there’s light at the end of the tunnel. I am definitely inclined towards IBM when I talk to employees at IBM vs at Amazon.
IBM over Amazon. Plus Seattle is dark and read about Seattle freeze.
