Heard IBM is okay as long as you're in one of their growth sectors #newIBM (Cloud, AI, Blockchain). Is this true? Thinking of accepting an offer there because I'm a fan of the what IBM is doing and the Hyperledger project w/ Linux Foundation, which is what I'd be working with/on: https://www.ibm.com/blockchain/hyperledger.html https://www.stellar.org/blog/IBM-KlickEx-Partnership/ https://www.cnbc.com/2017/09/18/ibm-far-outranks-microsoft-as-blockchain-industry-leader-report.html Can anyone who works there comment? I've heard mostly bad things, so am a little hesitant.
They are actually working with Stellar and have released 8 validator nodes. Seems like they aren't just throwing block chain as a buzzword, but actually working on it.
It's fine as long as your expectations are set in advance. Don't expect that IBM is going to value you like a SV company is going to. Don't expect meaningful bonuses/raises. There's a lot of cool technology work being done, but there's also a lot of bureaucracy.
I'm in security and take issue with some of what you say, particularly the blanket ageist comment. We're losing some high performers to retirement. Leaving because of lack of leadership, poor collaboration and yes, poor performance from peers, some of whom are old school but certainly not all. It's frustrating as hell sometimes that it's hard to replace poor performers, but please don't make it about age.
IBM can be a great or crappy place to work. I've been there 10+ years and have been promoted 4 times and make 3x what I did out of college. I still really like it and that's why I've stayed. There's no doubt that there are bad jobs here, but blockchain seems to be one of the bright spots.
I was looking at an SRE job offer I. blockchain earlier in the year and the pay was shit. If you’re interested in the tech you may like it, but you’re not going to get paid well and get good raises/bonuses. I would suggest not joining IBM if I were you. I left to join an external blockchain company, make twice my IBM salary, and am much happier with the what I’m doing.
Avoid IBM at all costs
Care to elaborate on your experience?
The biggest issue is when a division goes from being a"poster child" to being a" normal" part of IBM. When "profit target" or " margin goals" become part of the conversation you will find it difficult to update or add equipment, and RIFs are about to start. This is especially true if whatever you're working on stops being good headline or press release fodder.
I’m not in Blockchain, but I’m in another growth sector (Watson) and have had a solid experience so far. Like some other commenters said, there is bureaucracy, but likewise a lot of brilliant people and great work being done.
They are using blockchain as a buzzword to sell more clients that still are using paper to keep records.
