I was recently laid off and I have received 2 SWE offers that I am confused on: IBM: Work in my interest area, great team vibe. Mostly remote. TC: 180k Applied Materials: Work on proprietary product in the area I have a background in. Could narrow down my career growth to semiconductor/electronic based software industry. Seemed like a hierarchical org. Hybrid with 3 days a week in office. TC: 220k I have little knowledge of the work culture of both the companies and how would they be placed in terms of stability and financial perspective in the current market (could either of them have more chances for layoffs in future?). Which one would you pick if you were me? Your reasoning in comments would be greatly appreciated! Current TC: 0 YOE: 5
Negotiate with IBM if you already haven't. I would still go for IBM and stay in the tech zone. Career growth as a SWE in semiconductor is limited.
Which division and team in IBM ?
Avoid semi
They are probably going hybrid to on-site
Have you tried negotiating with IBM to meet the other offer?
They told me that they do not provide any equity and do not have fixed target bonus. I'm going to ask them for some sign on bonus.
Bonus at IBM is π₯, count that out and negotiate for max cash take home.
