IC4 TPM v/s IC3 RPM at Facebook.

Currently in Ops team as program manager (global ops) at Facebook. IC4 level. If i am able to get interview opportunity for both Technical Program Manager (TPM) and Rotational Product Manager (RPM), which one is better if I want to optimise for long term TC and aspire to be a PM in 2-3 yrs? Please add comments too! Would love to hear from current/ ex -Facebook employees. My thoughts- I feel I can get promoted faster in TPM and can join PM later (with down-level). With RPM, waiting for 18 months for IC4 promo seems brutal. YOE: 8 yrs. Current TC: 144k (GE in previous PSC) TPM TC: 255k (MPK) RPM TC: 164k (MPK) #FB #PM #tpm

Did you check these TC numbers with internal transfer recruiter? TPM from outside can make ~250k (MPK). But to my knowledge when u transition internally, only base gets adjusted which is in ~150k range for IC4 TPM and no fresh grant of RSUs. So wondering how will it become 255k as soon as you transition. Correct me if I am wrong. All the best in your transition.

If you want to be a PM get a job as a PM. Going from TPM to PM is hard - you will have to interview and prove yourself again.

I learnt from PMs and TPMs that its easier to switch from TPM to PM. You have to do full loop and all, but if you have PM managers batting for you (ample opportunities to show that as TPM?), its much easier. I know of many TPMs who transitioned to PM at FB, and even though it was a longish process (4-6 months), it was much easier than non TPMs they said. But curious to know other datapoints on this.

Idk if I'd call the actual conversion process much easier being in tpm vs other functions. Granted the role gets you closer to PM and you can use those learnings to do better in the interviews. BTW, it's also likely that you'll have to go down a level transitioning from non tech PgM to TPM. so please consider that too. (Though I've been hearing that hiring managers are now more open to keeping you at the same level) ..

TPM to PM is not easy there are about 1000 over people wanting to do this. Plus from tpm to pm you will be down leveled .. it’s total nonsense . So if PM is your thing then just take RPM and once you become PM and spend sometime in fb , you can move out .

Wow IC4 ~ 250k for TPM ? Damn looks like I was super lowe balled lol just making about the same in mpk as ic5 .

I guess the numbers posted by OP are wrong. On average IC4 tpm makes ~200k tc IC5 tpm makes ~250k tc
