If an L3 at Google gets an L5 offer elsewhere, should they take it?
I'm an L3 at Google getting CMEs for last 3 cycles. I am getting a couple of L5 offers at companies like {Doordash, Instacart, Uber, Robinhood, Salesforce}. I'm worried I might underperform in the new company as I don't have enough experience in building stuff at that level. Should I take a step by step approach and take one of the other L4 offers, or accept the opportunity of fastracking the career and take the L5 offer? I have been at Google for 2.5 years and have 2 years experience outside US which was not too relevant to working on applications like Uber, Instacart, etc.
Buddy first of all congratulations, its okay to be in diffidence and hard on yourself but if you have cracked a level its sign that you are good and atleast meet the bar. If you still feel you are not ready buy urself sometime before joining and prepare for the next role. You are already there, just a couple of weekend projects away from regaining that trust in your abilities, I am happy to help maybe a pair design/code review sessions can help. Just believe in yourself and move on.

See you had google brandname for long enough. Now tell me one thing honestly why have you been getting CME? Unsupportive boss etc or is it that you are overwhelmed with work and are slacking? If its case1 and you work well then no doubt just go outside and take the L5 at any place other than Amazon. If not then first introspect, get a good rating at Google and do the same. All others are more hectic and cutthroat than Google. Also they dont have all of Googles nice tooling infa docs and hand holding. So you definitely feel a lot to learn so make sure you are ready.
You have 4.5 YOE. Google underleveling you doesnโt meant you canโt perform as someone with 4.5 YOE. Take the L5, figure it out as you go. If you succeed, good. If you fail, you made a huge leap, learned a lot and will do well in the next L5 role you take.
