If you earn 100K salary in Houston how much would you expect in Northern Virginia?

Let's say you are moving within the same company, same position.

+1. Not a huge jump in cost of living to boost your salary that much.

100K and live 50 miles outside of D.C. with a shitty commute or 150K+ to live in NOVA or D.C. and still a shitty commute. Pick your poison.

https://www.nerdwallet.com/cost-of-living-calculator One of our interns built this. Might be useful for your move

I'm going south from NoVA

I hope to do the same, some day. Best of luck.

Where do you live now?

ABB Otterbucks Sep 15, 2017

Texas is a state tax free state, so when you move to VA you add state tax. VA state tax for >17K salary is 5.75%, so your current pay in houston, cost of living not adjusted is $105,750. Now, the cost of living in Richmond VA is lower than Houston, TX so you will break even at $100,597 (NerdWallet) Add your expected pay raise for the new job to that number and voila, you have your "expected salary"

19% for Plano TX to McLean,VA. I know you said you are in Houston - not sure if Houston COL is same as Plano.

Live in NoVA. 150K atleast, maybe online calculators tell only 20% but the reality is somewhat different here.
