If you have a competing offer and like your current job, how/when do you bring it up? Asap or at performance review?

I'm on my way to promotion. Really hoping for this year, but if not then has to be next year. Manager really likes me and values my work but company is cheap. Performance review cycles are at end of the year. But I like where I am and my role and company and geographic location. How can I play this? (Note: new company is stronger than current company).

if you love your job and lo behold your manager and if you are growing professionally ie more responsibilities not necessarily promotion, there is seldom a good reason to switch

Money? Upper management is cheap?

Clearly state your goals to your manager and ask if you are trending towards a promo. It needs to be a real promo and not just incrementing a number after your job title. Go with the path that maxes TC and move on it ASAP. Waiting works against you.

People chase TC bc getting additional responsibilities and liking your job are a crap shoot. I knew somebody who started with no experience and became a Product Owner bc nobody else wanted to (old people). I’ve joined teams where I’m like 8th highest ranked to be in any sort of leadership/responsibility despite sticking around for couple years

Your relationship with your manager and their manager / your team is the most important. If you like your manager and they like you, that’s something money can’t buy. If you like your job/role now, I would do everything you can to make a case for promotion. I wouldn’t bring up the other offer unless they start backing out. No good will come of you starting out by stating you already have another offer. Most people will see that as you already have one foot out the door. Your relationship with your manager may be damaged if you start with that.

What if I do it after I've rejected it, to prove loyalty? Managers job is to pay you the least and make you work the most regardless
