I came to the US from Pakistan for my undergrad, after taking a gap year after high school because I hadn't planned on applying for colleges abroad. On top of that, my degree was a 5-year co-op program that included internships. I had to spend a year doing internships during what was supposed to be my third year of college. So I graduated at 24.5 and only recently started an actual job. I feel like a grandma next to the 21-22 year-old new grads around me. My friends are already SWE II's and Senior SWEs. Although I have a whole year of experience from my internships where the companies made me work like a fulltime employee, it does not count as full-time work experience because I was still in college. I can't get promoted anytime soon because I'm honestly having trouble keeping up with my work, because I'm distracted and dragged down by stuff happening in my personal life. My manager asked me to be more present and accountable. I'm just struggling to feel a shred of positivity, and that's exactly what keeps making things even worse and harder for me.
1. Stop comparing 2. Enjoy your work 3. Take your time Oh and 0. At 25 you're still a kid in corporate world. Have a longer horizon
agree with Adobe. at this stage in your career, just focus on your learnings, your work and stop comparing.
I’ve had trouble like this at work due to ADHD, anxiety and depression. If your willing, try therapy. Not sure of Google’s benefits but I’m sure generous for mental health.
Remember this, everyone has their own journey. There are some in Pakistan of your age who still trying to get into tech, or US. Comparisons always hurt.
Tbh nobody cares if you had “full-time work experience” before starting. The only thing that matters is how you perform at your job. You can easily get to L4 within a year if you do your job super well, I’ve seen it happen to many people and done it myself. Also, what in the world are you complaining about? Making good money at Google at age 25? You have a great job most people in the world would be extremely grateful for in the prime of your life. Have some god damn perspective and stop moaning about your comfy 1st world life. Istg, some of the new hires are entitled morons
Google can be tough. Sometimes you just need to take a deep breath and come back to what you’re working on another time. You can also use gMentors for more guidance.
If you cry been in google at 25, just imagine if you were working for cognizant or tech mahindra at 40
Hey, I was around the same boat when I started my job. I am from India, and began my career as new grad when my friends were sde2... What really helped me is the hope that tomorrow is gonna be better. It always helps!!
Over time, levels will be even
You’re 25 working at Google. That’s an achievement not everyone can get.
Where are you located? Let’s hang out tomorrow.
TC?
