Immigrants: how did you “got a life” upon moving to the US?

Those who immigrated for work, knowing nobody, starting from scratch, how did you developed your new life? In terms of relationships, hobbies, activities or even in a more general sense.

I don’t really care about people saying whether or not I “have a life” as long as I am happy and doing things I want to do

You live life. There is no one size fits all! Go figure.

I definitely felt the difference in hookers from my home country. Also, weed is awesome.

Hope for a better future. Coming from a communist regime, I dreamed as a kid to have freedom of speech, live a country with “no one is above the law” - no corruption. Starting from 0, It gave me an underdog mindset and strong determination to against the odds and win (I moved here with family, not on visa). It turns out pretty well so far, except the “orange man”. I still think the USA is an amazing country, though❤️. 🙏

Got a roommate. Joined their soccer team. Made some friends at work. Did stuff that I wanted to do, like going to PAX, and met more people who also enjoyed them.

Cooking, self discipline, good healthy food and fitness, tech , less crowded , freedom from parents but also more regular interaction with them since I am away

Our first circle of friends were other recent immigrants, we shared our wins/finds/tips. Then work/hobby circles followed. Now that we have small kids we don’t have time for friends anyway :-/

Migrated from Bay Area to Austin 11 years ago, we knew nobody here. Made friends from church, kids’ classmates families, and neighbors.
