Impact of passport expiry on H1B extension

Passport is expiring in 05/2021, H1B is up for renewal in 05/2020. Due to an approved I140, I am hoping to get a 3 year renewal on my H1B. I’m curious about the impact of my impending passport expiration date on the length of renewal. If the extension is not tied to my passport expiry and I get the H1B stamp on my current passport, would I need to carry 2 passports starting 05/2021?

Yes. If your stamp is on the older passport you will have to carry the old one and the new one both.

Yes, passport validity and H1B extension are not related. You will have to carry both passports. Validity only impacts duration of stay.

Thanks! I see, so if I go for stamping before my new passport arrives the consulate will have no issues stamping my current passport with an expiry date that goes beyond the passport expiry itself? Or would the H1B stamp on the current passport would expire on the passport expiry requiring me to get a new stamp on the new passport for the remaining period.

I believe the guideline is your passport should be valid for the next six months.

How many different threads will you create around your passport that doesn’t expire for 2 more years? Just google it!
