Sorry, prefer to not mention company names. Im originally from West Africa, work in cybersecurity . YOE 11. Accepted an offer from a FAANG company in the Netherlands. 100k euro base. Relocation was offered but my family cannot relocate with me. After accepting, came upon some new information concerning some obligations in my home country and some previously unknown costs in NL, which meant that disposable income after expenses in both NL (rent, + essential upkeep) and old country (mortgage, some bank loans, school, family upkeep etc) will be just about 700euro, minus healthcare and miscellaneous for family (2 toddlers + spouse) in old country, and any luxuries (eat out, gadgets, out of pocket, etc) in new. Much less than I currently have in disposable in my old country. Explained to the recruiter and tried to renegotiate the accepted offer, no budge. Did some research. Thought I might have been lowballed, i tried to renegotiate the accepted offer again, no budge once again. I decided to still go ahead and take this new job. 1 week into my notice period, old company pulled an unknown rule out of staff rule book, to extend my notice period or risk legal issues and home repossession. The new company accepted my new notice period. I went back to the drawing board to try to cut out some expenses, can expect to add just about another 100 euro to disposable income. Realised I can't cut anymore and might just have to accept that life will be tight in NL, with having expenses in 2 countries and hope there will be no unexpected costs come from my family in my old country. And so will just take the role for the future possibilities in europe . Today, 3 weeks to the end of the extended notice period, my old company steps up, Informs me and starts paying me a 19% raise in base and 19% raise in other benefits backdated to January, after all liabilities, with the explanation that they really didn't want to lose me. They also haven't acknowledged my earlier resignation as well. MD called me personally to inform me and ask me to reconsider again; they have been on this since I tendered my resignation. Looks like I might have to rescind my earlier accepted offer, since this new raise now puts my disposable income in my old country way above what I'd have in NL. Life will be easier and also wouldn't want to burn any bridges back home just in case, since this is locally, a very influential company. What are the implications of rescinding? Will I be blacklisted and how might it affect future roles at other companies, especially in NL?. Can a blacklist be shared amongst other companies ?. Any legal issues with my prospective NL company if I rescind? I have signed an employment contract. How do I go about communicating this to the new company in NL. The hiring manager wants to speak to me tomorrow, to catch up before I arrive. Visa is ready, ticket is booked and all other preparations done to leave. This is a company I really will like to apply to again in the future, after I aggressively work on clearing some of my liabilities which stifled this move. It's been a roller coaster. Any advice??
Can you say that due to family obligations my circumstances have changed and I can no longer pursue opportunities away from family and outside of the country/geography/* at this time. I appreciate the opportunity and hopefully ... yada yada.
Can you blame UkrainRussia war as reason not to migrate especially with plight of Black people in Europe now?
Wtf logic is that? Ukraine and Russia are not the entire Europe
Wait Europe is not a country?
Go back home. You are still in probation period so you can go at any time.
You can tell the hiring manager you cannot join due to family situation AND the fact that the pay in NL makes the family situation harder.
Why would you want to stay in a country where companies can legally threaten you with home repossession?
They are a bank, and actually advanced the mortgage. Future interest rates are at their whim and repayment rates was going to be made unbearable for me, ending in repossession.
Move to NL , give your family the opportunity to live and study in Europe , it doesn’t matter how well off your are in west Africa , go to Europe . If you need to come back you will be the guy who comes from FAANG in Europe.
Congrats for managing so many crazy constraints and moving parts and ultimately winning on every front. Take care of your mental health
Seriously
Thanks. It's been so exhausting over the last few weeks. So many different emotions. Happiness, to fear, to disappointment, to resignation, to accepting it as it is.
