Hi, I am expecting an offer from Indeed. I have been asked to provide my location preference and I am confused between Austin and SFO. What TC can i expect for the role of Senior Software Engineer in the above locations ? Would it matter, in terms of work and opportunities for growth, if I choose a location that's not the HQ ? Ideally, I would prefer the city life with good weather and public transportation. Thanks !
Indeed pays well and are in need of senior engineers. They can probably beat Google since Google is low-balling recently.
Indeed does pay well because they don't have RSUs. They instead provide LTIPs that one can encash only after 3 years.
They pay well in terms of TC. Doesn't matter where the money comes from if it's liquid. Their base is higher than public companies as well as signon/anniversary bonuses to compensate for the lack of RSUs
Go to Austin, if you're mainstream. Go to SF if you're alternative.
How many YOE

Indeed in Austin has a pretty large presence. You can probably expect 150+ tc. Austin weather is not bad, public transportation is not very good but getting better. But cost of living is great and there is a lot to do here. Keep us updated on what your offer is!
I recommend Austin strongly for engineering. You will have more options of teams to work on and will be more likely to be able to find a role that plays to your strengths and interests. Austin is hot but otherwise pretty great. Have lived in SF too and like both. SF is insanely expensive. More than it seems when you look at the chars.
That makes sense. Isn't there a 3 month rotation period where you can work with different teams for a month each and then decide which one suits best ?
Not anymore. There are no rotations now
SF! If you don't like it in 8 months you have plenty of more places to work and apply to. If you do like it at a year point then you can always transfer or work out of Austin!
Makes sense. Thanks for your input.
What did they actually say about level they can be shifty on that. Technically senior is level 3 but hard to get and matches up ok with google t5 or high t4. Austin will have the most opportunities then Seattle SF is still very small and I rarely hear from them I don’t think we have many projects there and I doubt we pay well enough to staff the place with non juniors. If actual level tc I would expect Austin salary 150k 50k ltips and they should be able to give 25k anniversary bonus and maybe 25k signing. Maybe a bit more on those bonus. Seattle col adjustment is +20% to salary I expect SF is similar or a bit more. No where near enough. We pay pretty top of market for Austin but not so much for other locations. After level 3 growth is very hard and we have only a few level 4s.
does indeed pay well in sf and Seattle for new grads?
Yeah pretty good if you make it. Austin col is lower so it goes further. Good new grads can probably get 130k TC
I don’t think the adjustment for SF is going to cover the higher cost of living. The SF office is very small–1 or 2 floors last time I was there. Austin office is really cool and more likely to be close to team members, leaders, managers. If you don’t mind the weather, Austin is probably a better choice for long term growth and your money will go further. (FYI I work remotely from CA but not in SF)
Indeed allows remote work?
Depends on the team and role, but yes. My team is about half remote. You should join us ;)
What is the TC offered? How many LTIPS?
You want Indeed Austin. Because SFO (the city; I have nothing against Indeed's SFO office) is a very unpleasant place
