India repatriation: Go/No go?

Relevant for Indians only: India started repatriating it's citizens from US from this week. Do you think it makes sense to send parents back to India now or wait until commercial flights open up? To stay back, we would need to extend their visitor visa. https://livefromalounge.com/repatriation-flights-to-india-from-usa/

Stay. They will be quarantined. God knows where. Health risk. India spread just started. Medical facilities are already overwhelmed.

Bloomberg yEfg02 May 7, 2020

Depends on what you are going to do to expose them to in the US. Have kids ? Wife ? How many people step out of the house every day and could be possible carriers ? If they catch the dreaded C, you not only have to worry about their health but as well as finances (if no insurance).

Visitor insurance policies are not worth the paper they are printed on.

Stay in US. At least you all are together. Get proper insurance though not the ICICI scam one. I paid insurance for my parents for 45 days total around $800, but I checked reviews, coverage everything

And did you use it? I paid similar and had to use it only to get $3000 bill for various things. Had to take parent to ER for kidney stone.

Well I checked and it was I had to pay 20% from my pocket for in network hospitals. US healthcare is expensive. I broke my ankle here and had 3 surgeries here. My first surgery coated me $55,000 and I did pay $2400 from my pocket. And it was best insurance plan, costing $2500 premium for students That 55,000 will be reduced to 30,000 due to in network. But even then you have to pay some amount i.e. 10% till u meet the out of pocket maximum

India is not absolutely safe

Stay put

Stay

Bloomberg c300 May 7, 2020

Read the policy guys. In case of emergencies you’ll not be able to go to “in-network”. Insurance is good business and they’ll try to rip you off. Spend few hundred dollars now or else you’ll end up paying 1000s more later.

Dude. Are you serious? Why would you send your parents to travel in this environment? Who knows what kind of people travel in those flights, and god forbid if they catch Covid-19 due to someone in the flight. Better stay put for atleast 6 months

What would you think your parents would have done if the situation was reversed?

Amazon Tis4Tech OP May 9, 2020

Thanks all for the inputs. It is a really tough decision for me and the collective wisdom of this group is exactly what I needed. I don't think going back to India at this time is a good option either, but my parents have a strong reason to go. Parenting your parents is not easy. Anyway, thanks again. I have decided to keep an eye on the first group's experience that leaves today and then decide.

Best wishes although special flights can be risky and chaotic, so just listen to first batch experienceds. The only thing I would say is it seems unlikely regular flights will commence soon since the peak is projected in July for India which might stay for few weeks. Dont think any regular international flights will be there for next few months.

Amazon Tis4Tech OP May 9, 2020

That's the primary driving factor. Thank you for your inputs.
