Whenever I tell people I work at Proofpoint, a lot of them don’t show it on their face, but have instead a sympathetic look. Like a “no idea what that is, poor you” kind of face. It destroys me inside. Lately I’ve just been telling people I work at Apple or Nvidia, and the reaction is totally different. It backfired one time when someone looked me up on Linkedin though - I just told him that I didn’t update my Linkedin yet with Apple/Nvidia. I’ve tried so hard to get into top companies like Apple and Nvidia, but have never passed their interviews. Honestly, I’ve had this inferiority complex my whole life, where I have never gotten into any top company nor Ivy League school. I don’t even want to work at Proofpoint, but I had no other choice. How do you guys cope?
TC and what’s proofpoint?
My point exactly…
I don’t talk or hang out with other software engineers lol. I make real friends in the real world based on other things I enjoy and no one gives a shit about where I work.
Sounds like you need to work with a therapist to get over your insecurities. Learn to overcome status anxieties as it won’t make you happy if you continue down that path even if you landed at Google.
Tbh I dont wanna go to Google now with all their layoffs and amazon culture
So you want life to be easy but also want prestige.
99.9% of all US businesses are small businesses. There is nothing abnormal here. Say what your companies does, not what your company is, if the name is unknown.
Where I work literally never comes up in conversation with my friends. And as long as my plate is full I'm not worried what someone else's looks like. Fact of the matter is in our field we are already ahead of the earnings curve for most americans. I pay almost as much just in taxes as the median income in the area I live. Just perspective
Thanks, Oracle. This bought tears to my eyes. Shunned companies, unite!
Have pride in what you do and find purpose in life. life is not about working for prestigious companies. of course if you are unhappy about your current work place, work on getting a better job you like.
There’s no prestige being a salaried worker. Everyone complains wherever you go. Apple blind is a prime example.
What’s it like in Apple blind?
When you die, your tombstone will not have the place where you worked. The people you know won’t remember you for your TC. You need a hobby and some new friends.
I used to be like you except I worked at Nvidia and at that time people didn’t know what Nvidia was. My work was better as compared to here and I was having more challenging things to do. With time, you will learn, your company name does not matter, your pay == your self worth. With time, and change you will find yourself and disassociate yourself from these tags
This isn’t something that will be fixed by “getting prestige” - consider therapy
