I got a call from a google sourcer. I agreed to an interview. He sent me a prep guide which labelled my title as Infrastructure Software engineer. 1. Seems like it might be a different job family altogether or is it a title for people working on GCP products? 2. What’s the difference between the generic SWE and Infra SWE? 3. Is it like an SRE? 4. There seems to be an additional kind of interview other than system design and leetcode algo interview which says “At least one interview will be focused on your expertise within Infrastructure. Please work directly with your recruiter to understand the panel of interview topics. Infrastructure - Focused on your subtopic: Compute, Storage, Networking, Tools or Low Level“ I’ve never heard of this one before, what’s this like? PS: I don’t think it’s a SETI #engineering #software #swe #google #swe #sre #interview #engineering #software #swe

Nope it’s a regular SWE role your interviewers will just be more likely to ask you infra questions and your recruiter will probably try to put you in an infra team. It’s not SRE or a test engineer. Once you’re in Google you’ll just be a regular SWE and would be eligible to try to transfer to whatever random front end or research team (that will take you). It’s just for hiring you’ll be slotted into infra roles working on lower level stuff
Hey thanks for clarifying. I was wondering if you could give me an example of what you mean by infra question. Eg I know about system design and algo interviews. Not sure how to prepare for this one.
Will it be kind of a design question where it might boil down to selecting between weak or strong consistency model? Could it be just a generic conversation around some aspect of distributed systems?
Well. Don't underestimate this opportunity..I believe your efforts directly influence the operations folks and make their lives easier. And Infra area, just having good understanding about TCP IP, routers switches, SDN controllers, very basic understanding.. Not required to be a pro..
As an infrastructure engineer. Your job role is primarily quasi front and back end admin support. It’s your job to ensure the cloud platform infrastructure your dev team pushes out applications too, carry them to production efficiently and returns as responsive for testing environments. Prepare to know IAC, Linux command line, some cloud networking, resizing of servers and db for best senator use and bonus would be automation software services and examples of using the cd/ci method
