Is it worth the jump? will be moving from Portland to Redmond. Not sure if i’m making the right move. Have a wife a kid. Will be moving away from family/friends. I grew up in Portland and went to school here so it’s a tough decision. Any thoughts? TC @ Intel 100k TC @ MSFT ~165k
Mind sharing offer breakdown?
What role?
How is your wlb at Intel? Mine is pretty great and I value it at 50k per year. If you have good wlb and freedom because you have been at Intel for some time then it might not be worth it honestly.
Yeah it’s pretty easy and WLB is good at Intel. I’m considering coming back to Intel few years from now. Looking at MSFT as a good bump in my career
Make sure to factor in living costs and housing. (Redmond is super expensive so you will live far away and commute so that adds stress). That might make the TC jump actually not look that sexy anymore. Having to rebuild social circle etc May be tough for you if u have never left your home turf ever (sounds like it). Weather is mostly the same crappy one so that’s a wash. WLB in Microsoft can be pretty fine but depends on team (azure means likely not). Not sure how to compare with Intel tho.
Why did you interview at MSFT in the first place? Are you unhappy at Intel?
Yeah. I’m unhappy and the work is not challenging anymore.
It’s pretty expensive, might want to ask for more. If you’re dead set on Portland I’d try to jump to Nike in Beaverton. I make 110TC with less than a year of experience and the WLB is excellent
If you are moving from Portland to Redmond, pay attention to the house price differences

How to be content in life?
From a company and TC perspective, yes. Only you can decide from a personal perspective
