Interviews have gotten ridiculous.

Company 1 : Leetcode hard dint solve it. Company 2: Leetcode medium. While typing the code out, made a minor bug and before I could write the next line, the interviewer pointed out the bug and corrected it. Later the feedback was there were bugs and interviewer helped to correct it. Reject Company 3: custom question(mediumish) Interview went perfectly fine custom question,, finished 15-20 mins before time. Reject. Company 4: hackerrank or something like that. Turned my camera on and it felt weird to interview like this, closed the test midway. Rejected as expected, no complaints here as i shouldn't have accepted the test to begin with. Company 5: easy question algo wise, but had tons of requirements. Had to write 300 lines of code, write test class and execute several test cases(5). All in timed 1 hour interview session. Finished right on time. Reject. The company 5 really killed all my motivation to interview again in a leetcodish way. Are there companies which do project style interviews? Will target those instead Atleast can have a better shot than going through these bs leetcode style nonsense.

Try early stage startups.

Any names? I'm actually main targeting startups. I knew big companies do this. But most of these 5 are startups

It’s not you; it’s the market. Maybe you could share these companies to help other people here understand what they might be in for during their interview? Companies have an excess of talent to pick from right now, so you may be losing out to minor details that were allowed before in a healthier market. I’d try investing in interview preparation, and seeing where you’re coming up short. Other than that, do a sitrep and see where you went wrong. As someone who recently rejected a company for a cognitive, behavioral and take-home assessment that was sent over to me at the beginning of the hiring process, project style interviews are a blight on the industry and are even worse than LC-style interviews considering that you’re doing free work for the chance of a job that may not even be paying 🍌🍌. If you really want to try your luck, here’s a handy link: https://github.com/poteto/hiring-without-whiteboards. Good luck! TC: 90K

Trust me , I have been through project style interviews and have never failed in the project review round, always go to onsite and then fail there. And even after i fail there, atleast the process felt fulfilling. I don't know any company would use the code in production. The 5th company experience felt like working for free but on steroids. I rather have more time and worst case I can modify the code and use for myself

The handy link unfortunately gives a 404😀. Should I take it as a hint?

What’s your LC count?

New
Pbbi52 OP Jun 21, 2023

Unfortunately I don't have a lc count or something like that. I can do easy and mediums and if it's a hard I just do a well left.

Bell Bell Jun 21, 2023

Are you in Canada? Bell doesn't do those bullshit leetcode interviews. I helped interview some candidates and we always gave them an actual problem to solve sorta like company #5.

New
Pbbi52 OP Jun 21, 2023

Not in canada 😞. Also is it a 1 hour timed test? Inteested if there are us positions

Bell Bell Jun 21, 2023

It was an hour timed test. Unfortunately I don't think Bell exists in the US, sorry :C

I typically avoid assignments before actually speaking to someone at the company before which seem like company's 3-5. I mostly treat them as practice interviews idm bombing before trying to interview where I want. With company 2, how well do you think you explained your thought process before jumping into the code? Sometimes that can help save you. For some reason it seems like I get less LC interviews than ppl even applying at the same company for the same role....... Kinda wish my interviews lately had more structure.

I did explain well for interview2, it was random. Only 4 was an assignment and I usually avoid it too. But I creeped put seeing my house was being recorded. Dint interview ae a candidate for a while, so surprised that it's become such a bad game

Yeah..... I've noticed HM's are at least behaving themselves, but technical rounds have been weird with interviewers showing up late or just acting unprofessional. Had one interview recently that gave me a really bad vibe and the recruiter told me to study LC, was just a bunch of curve balls after they showed up late.

It's not always about just solving the challenges... You have to ask questions, be able to demonstrate legitimate value to the team and the kind of problems they face, and you also very much have to not be as a$$hole. Not saying you are or aren't those things, just putting it all out there.

New
Pbbi52 OP Jun 21, 2023

Absolutely I enjoy those things and when i interview i give enough time to asses prior experience of the candidate as well as ask questions. But during the 5 interviews while asking questions, the interviewer was like "can we move to the coding question. I'll answer it if we have time at end"... Felt like a school exam and the interviewer was a teacher, rather than a candidate taking an interview Project based interviews also leave me enough time to talk other things during face to face, which is why I love them

Naive comment. No its not. Its either you get the answer or you dont.

Northrop Grumman iqik01 Jun 21, 2023

Go to defense! Their literal interview question was: do you know c#?

New
Pbbi52 OP Jun 21, 2023

The pain of a h1b. That would work if had a clearance

Haven Technologies Sears 💩 Jun 21, 2023

I interviewed at Northrop ~22 years ago for my first job out of school. They went with someone else. (The commute would have been obscene anyway.)
