Is Airbnb a safe place to go now?

Got an up-level offer from Airbnb. Now was an L4 engineer at G. New offer is a senior one. Is it worthy moving? I’m kind of worried about the economic environment but the offer numbers and leveling are tempting plus I’m still far from being promoted to L5 due to the chaos and reorgs in my team. I heard Airbnb has very good refresh and bonus, almost 2X refresh of G but not sure it’s sustainable during recessions or not. If we will get into recession, will people stop traveling? I’m optimistic about 2022 traveling but kind of concerned about 2023. Tc: 370k Yoe:6 #tech #airbnb #layoff

Your offer details?

Google Yfzn56 OP Jun 16, 2022

~420k per year not included the sign on

Amazon mmllmm Jun 16, 2022

You don’t provide much info to share a helpful opinion. Based on what you give, $420K is absolutely not worth. If your tc is $370K at this market, I can say it is still better than $420K at airbnb. I would only switch if the offer was greater than $500K.

Not a good choice in this time.. Google is safe heaven in this recession times. You will get more opportunities later but wait after this situation becomes normal.

Airbnb has peaked Consumers now realize hotels are becoming a better option. Airbnb owners have become greedy charging cleaning fees on top of expecting guests to clean dishes, take out trash, etc The tenant/landlord rating system keeps people compliant, but I imagine the Airbnb brand and value proposition are no longer what they once were

The hate lol. But it’s true tho.

So true I myself have found hotels to be cheaper or comparable to airbnb. Might as well go for to hotel amirite?

There is no such thing as safe. Airbnb is rock solid but not profitable. It’s a risk which you should consider taking if the comp is much better than your current one. You should also consider if you do get laid off, what’s the worst than can happen. Good luck.

Google Yfzn56 OP Jun 16, 2022

They start being profitable from last er irrc.

Salesforce sfi2022 Jun 16, 2022

Imagine u got laid off after 6mons..do u think u can get hired at the same level elsewhere immediately? It's a pain to go through. I'd say stick to Google this year. Once market recovers, u can get such level up offers in many companies. Let it go now.

COVID crash was the shortest economy crash and even that made Airbnb layoff people so not sure if Airbnb will withstand a recession with claws!

Google Yfzn56 OP Jun 16, 2022

Pandemic causing Airbnb booking # down to 0. Will rescission have the same impact?

Amazon iMnotACat2 Jun 16, 2022

Do expect people to travel when they are unemployed/ living paycheck to paycheck due to insane cost of living/house poor/ employed with underperforming investments?

Microsoft techCuck69 Jun 16, 2022

I honestly think airbnb owners will be forced to lower their rates to provide enough income for their mortgages. Also we havent seen signs of people not wanting to travel. I'd say safe

Joining in July. No going back for me but would appreciate some insights on how prepared I should be to run

Robinhood Recession! Jun 17, 2022

Why you need to run?

Amazon x_x000 Jun 29, 2022

Op are you in Airbnb why you want to run

Microsoft PlrL33 Jun 17, 2022

If you have a path to L5 in Google, definitely stay; if you are already stuck and hate your job, maybe switching is fine... You get that L5 title, joining when stock got cheaper and Airbnb in long run will be likely be fine.
