Read a lot on Blind/Reddit about Google being more coasting culture (outside of GCP). I'm not ready to coast, but I don't want to be Amazon grinding either. I'm just wondering if it's worth it to try to make the switch to Google. There are tons of esoteric algorithms I'd need to practice on LC before Google interviews (DP, Boyer-Moore, etc) and I'm not really getting the vibe that the grass is much greener, especially now that Google has enforced RTO too. Am I just too jaded from being at Amazon? TC: 260k
Depends on the offer and team. Google is not a small company.
Uh you don’t even have an offer yet, yet alone an interview scheduled? This question is pointless otherwise. Google is huge company with many different teams and projects. Your experience will heavily depend on the team, you can’t make a broad generalization about a company that size.
Generally the rule of thumb is that anything is better than Amazon, unless you have a very specific reason for being there. Google is a tough sell in this market with all of its woes, but you may be able to find a better culture there than at Amazon. You’d be going from one basket case to another, so I wouldn’t stress out about the move too much. Check which team/org you’d be joining and if the TC bump is worth it and then move on. Good luck! Amazon has good pockets and a great entry place to big tech to build at scale.
My team at Amazon is pretty chill
We imported your Focus culture stuff but it’s kinda worse almost? I’d rather have Amazon style management all the time, than have it be the one time in 3 years my manager has something to say. Lotta cultural mismatch stuff going down
Do you have an offer from google?
I really don’t understand the bearishness on Google these days. They were too protective of search and got beat to market w/ Chat GPT, but they still have some huge competitive advantages.
My former coworker hopped to Google about a year ago for a little pay bump and got laid off a few months after joining. It’s definitely dependent on what team you are on now and what team you transfer to.
Why was he/she/they laid off? Is he/she/they working overtime?
Ex Amazon here and you really need not ask. Google >>> Amazon.
Boyer-moore?
The answer to this question entirely depends on what team you’re on at Amazon and which one you’d end up on in Google. Don’t trust anyone giving a blanket answer.
