Multiple round of layoffs, Microsoft/Google racing ahead with AI in cloud and while Amazon (so called Alexa pioneer) cuts Alexa investments and literally nothing to show. Retail is going to be in the drain given the economy. Heck even my Amazon fresh free delivery requires 3x $150 cart value now. Writing on the wall for Amazon!?
does this mean yall will revive Cortana and have a device
The name is Copilot and it will be in all your devices 😎
u mean the github thing?
No. They are just a day 10k company like everyone else. 🤷♀️
I don’t think amazon is screwed, but they are going to get left in the dust in the AI race unless there’s a major acquisition. I don’t think this is a huge deal though if AWS can manage to become the preferred infra and compute layer for these AI companies (or at least maintain market share relative to azure)
Not screwed. Too much market to capture in retail in long term so the growth will be there after the economy. AWS is still doing fine and there are other rising business like advertising. Alexa is what windows phone was for Microsoft . Not all bets are won. Its good that they are slowly pivoting from alexa.
Retail loses money though doesn’t it?
It loses market because of bad planning and there are some major projects for cost savings. In few years, it will become profitable.
Apple and Netflix survive because their core product is not software. iPhone for Apple and entertainment content for nextflix. AWS part of Amazon will survive because it has a massive lead over other 2 cloud providers and enterprises are locked in. Meta and Google are doomed if they can’t find an alternative revenue stream to Ads in next 6 months. On top of that chatgpt will eat away google search users and TikTok will eat away meta users.
How are ads doomed? People will never stop showing ads...
Ads as a primary source of monetization is doomed. Regulators are going to tighten user privacy laws. So can’t spy on everything a user is doing like in the past and on the merchant side - ads is proving to be very poor ROI after the COVID boom is over. Funnily enough business prefer listing their good and service in a marketplace where they pay only if the sale happens. That’s much better ROI than paying for random clicks which no one knows is even resulting in a sale or bringing in high value customers
Every tech company is different and last few years they all got clubbed into a single FAANG bucket. Amazon needs to get cash flow positive asap. They have no choice. It will impact the innovation they work on. They have no choice but to focus on their core which is retail, cloud and ads. They can always acquire someone in the future even if they miss the boat.
No. Amazon can't die because it's literally created multiple lives. Lol the fact you ask...can Amazon compete in... ai speaks to the empire that exists! Every other consumer asks ...can Amazon get my shit to me on time? But then realizes they've set the standard for what fast and on time even is
U know there is Shopify and instacart right. And amazon.com was losing money last year
You know that's operating loss right? Related to strategic expenses (FC and related depreciation. You know that instacart and Shopify have nothing really on Amazon given they duplicate services they already "mastered". Amazon and e commerce are synonyms. They're not apart of the lexicon. If Amazon wasn't concerned with more regulatory scrutiny, you know their DSPs and flex drivers... They could pivot them into duplicating what Instacart does. Instacart I believe shopped at whole foods before Amazon got wise to keeping data in-house.
NLP isn’t all AI
Lol you must be living under the rock if you haven't seen applications of transformer modern architecture across so many domains. Not to mention language model is going to be the next interface/input to everything just like keyboard, mouse and touch
Interesting.. Microsoft employees these days on blind answering like Chatbots. Seems like you're the one living under a rock if you think that AI (and its industry applications) is only about NLP. Sure NLP have a very strong "iPhone" moment right now but that only will push AI more generally (hopefully).

At least we aren't Meta 🤷♂️
Of course we aren't Meta. Meta has created some kick ass open source projects like pytorch, react, graphql, cassandra, flow, jest, rocksdb, relay and many more. Literally changed the mobile development industy with all these tools. What has Amazon contributed? We in fact bully open source companies by our big dildo called aws.
Don’t forget Amazon gave OpenJDK Corretto. Save my company at least $50 million. We’ve total 1 million installs worldwide and Oracle was asking us to pay $50 million per year.
