Is Apple’s Ad Policy Bad for the Economy?

Seems so hypocritical to me that Apple can track whatever they want, but Snap, Twitter, Meta, Tiktok etc can’t on iOS devices. At least not without giving a big cut to Apple. My friend has a successful business that relied heavily on Facebook ads. Sales nosedived after Apple started their war on tracking. Like -80% over night. Is it better for the economy that companies can track you and show you products and things that are potentially relevant to you? Or is it more important that we crack down on privacy at all costs, even if it benefits one company vs the open internet? iOS has majority share in the US which makes it a bit icky in my eyes.

Apple gets to define their own rules. They're really using their last card though because they're making other companies upset.

Until regulators step in. Lightning port, How are you?

Google Sr. Staff Nov 9, 2022

What will regulators say? Apple, why are you not letting Facebook access users data without users permission?

Another reason to invest in meta

The question is bigger than these corporate names. Is user information tracking (to a point you know them better than their own mother) important ?

Fair point. Seems like a compromise would solve this vs a total ban on cross app tracking.

It’s scary I feel like i’m getting ads based on shit i watch offline

Microsoft लड्डू Nov 9, 2022

Another hypocrisy is that they used to bash google and Facebook for running ads and selling people’s info and now apple itself has started running ads on several of their products like App Store, Apple News, etc. I am sure they will soon start ad supported Apple TV+ subscription and ad supported iPhone (like kindle which shows ads on Lock Screen).

Lyft qCbJ38 OP Nov 9, 2022

Bingo!

Microsoft लड्डू Nov 9, 2022

Right, but it’s just a matter of time. They were against ads in the past Now they started running ads based on interests, searches, etc. In future they WILL create a detailed user profile, track user behavior and run ads based on that and more. It’s just a better of time. Mark my words. It’s no different that in the past google calling Microsoft evil 👿 because that rhetoric sold. And now google itself is a pretty evil company. The ONLY aim of a capitalist is to make money- by hook or by crook. They will follow rules and virtue signal as long as by doing so makes them money and after than… Just look at Netflix, they were so much again running ads. Now just partnered with one of the most evil companies (Microsoft) to run ads.

I will put that Apple on the middle emoji's head.

The difference is, Apple doesn’t monetize its customers data externally. Those partaking in the ad business too. I’d say Apple is sending a strong message that no organization that sits on its platforms will be able to monetize first party data.

Google NYIL245 Nov 9, 2022

What do you mean externally. They are already running ads based on your interest.

Google torylanez Nov 9, 2022

> I’d say Apple is sending a strong message that no organization that sits on its platforms will be able to monetize first party data Right so only Apple can do the monetizing..

Google Lejeune Nov 9, 2022

Time to move to Twitter to track users. Oh wait...

Meta reOrgTime Nov 9, 2022

To level the playing field Apple should simply not be allowed to sell ads. Period.

Meta oculuster Nov 9, 2022

And Meta shouldn't be allowed to make hardware? App store fees should be user facing. That will solve everything.

Meta reOrgTime Nov 9, 2022

Apple has on device data that others don’t have. Removing the ability to do ads would disincentivize them from harming other businesses to help themselves.

EA rrFd33 Nov 9, 2022

Fuck ads … I am glad apple did what they did … privacy needs to be respected

Microsoft Recluse 🕷 Nov 9, 2022

Apple has way too much market power. But it’s great they stop 3rd parties from tracking.

Meta mc00 Nov 9, 2022

Lol at your response absurd understanding of privacy? You want privacy? GTFO Apple products. Your photos and data is being scanned everyday. Get your head out of your ass.

Microsoft Recluse 🕷 Nov 9, 2022

I’m sorry. Where did I say anything about privacy, photos, scanning etc?
