I got a full time offer for DFT but since I majored in EE and CS, I could also go into SWE or anything in between. I like working with hardware a lot but couldn’t land any design roles. Now I’m worried that DFT is a dead end field. Could I transition to embedded or digital design after two years or will I get boxed in? Would more experienced engineers recommend new grads to go into DV/DFT? TC: 0 YOE: 0 Offer: TC: 140k #hardware #newgrad
Most likely won't get to be hands on with actual HW for DV. Maybe with DFT. If you like hands on lab work then PCB/digital system design is the way to go. Slow moving like what New lalalaboom said and less opportunities for sure.
DV is definitely always in short supply. When I started my career, we need 1 DV engineer for 2 designers. Now it is the opposite :) DFT is needed by every company who builds chips but not in the numbers they need DV or design. Not a lot of jobs but also not a lot of DFT engineers so I guess it is good.
When staffing for a project, the ratio js typically 1 RTL Arch to 2 DV to 3 to 4 PD depending on node and 1 to 2 DFT... depending on production yield targets.
I would pursue DV over DFT. DFT for a small fabless semi can easily outsource DFT but not DV.
DV is a transition to sw if you don’t want leetcode your way to sw as of now
DV it is
