Every quarter I see number ads for YouTube videos going up. Like before videos, during videos and then after it. They seem to increase top and bottom line with that but how far can they go? Google hardware lineups are so mediocre and cloud is one generation behind. Waymo seems to be doing manual testing for a decade and still doing testing with drivers. PS: before Amazon haters jump-in, I don’t work at Amazon. I work at Stripe. TC: 520k YOE: 12 #tech
Google is the place where oblivious engineers go to claim the title "Google" on their resume. People who know the market and their shit simply dont go to Google.
Still a whole world out there of sweet children killing each other to get in
yes, especially people from India and other parts of Asia, but that applies to Amazon, Apple, Facebook as well. These people will kill each other to secure a job in any of the well known tech companies. Not a lot of international people know about Intuit, for example.
The removal of Dislike count on YouTube videos was the last straw for me. It is annoying as hell because now me watching more garbage content has gone up (which is what YouTube wants). The like/dislike ratio on YouTube has saved me countless hours. Fuck Google! Already moved search to DuckDuckGo Already moved from Chrome to Firefox In process of moving from Gmail to Protonmail Already moved from Google Photos to iCloud Photos Moved from Gdocs to the Microsoft suite Moved from Google Maps to Apple Maps Disabled Google Pay and moved to other services Never used Google Play Music because Spotify is better Can’t move from YouTube but I’ll use ad blockers wherever I can. We use AWS at work but if there is any talk of GCP, I’ll try to veto it in Ops meetings (might not amount to anything but at least I will try) Never used Google chat clients because they were/are garbage.
Apple maps 😒
@ByteDance: I hadn’t used Apple Maps in ages even though I am on an iPhone but they seem to have made very good progress since that dumpster fire of the very first release. And yes, Apple also tries to squeeze out as much as they can from a user in terms of revenue but boy do they get UI/UX correct! Google on the other hand gives zero fucks. It is general consensus that not a single person likes the removal of the Dislike count (except the YouTube execs). Way to mightily piss off your users.
What happened to google fiber? They could’ve made a huge dent in the ISP industry
Competing with Comcast etc. is more of a legal battle than a technical one; Google underestimated how much they'd need to spend in non-technical areas just to make a dent.
Have you ever read the terms of service for Google Fiber? You basically have to agree to ads and have your data ingested for analysis. I suppose it's no different than any other Google product.
What's your level at Stripe?
L3
Does L3 feel too junior at Stripe? Typically what's the range of Yoe of folks at that level at Stripe? And how easy to get to staff?
Google innovates through integration/cross-pollination/improvements to its existing products. The culture isn't really compatible with innovation in new, highly-competitive markets.
Was this always the case? I felt like it was going gangbusters during its Android days. Seemed to slow down after that.
It's more an artifact of company size. When a company gets as big as Google is now, it doesn't make sense for them to develop new products from-scratch. Their biggest technical advantage is the scalable infra developed over the years; this infra is actually a hindrance (in the form of unwarranted complexity) for young products with a handful of users. It makes more sense for Google to let small agile startups innovate and compete, then acquire the winners to integrate with their other products/infra/ads. Far less risk.
Google only has a bunch of lowballed down leveled dudes left according to blind. Can they innovate?
Google doesn't need to innovate to grow. They can always acquire startups or improve monetization in their existing products or improve sales on cloud.
Googles revenue is basically whatever they want. YouTube and search is basically a monopoly and they have other business segments that they don’t even monetize right now like maps. Idk how much more revenue they can squeeze out of ads but I imagine they will continue to grow for how long it’s tough to say. If competitors to search and YouTube start cropping up and stealing market share i think they will be in trouble. Similar to Coca Cola, economics of the business are fantastic once you have an established moat. It’s their game to lose right now.
They might hit a moonshot… but will then get out sold by a strong second mover who is more customer focused.
The moonshot came and went 20 years ago with Search. They got lucky with acquiring YouTube when they did. The next 30 years will be a long slow death like every other big tech of the day: Cisco, Oracle, IBM, etc.

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
There are millions of things Google can do. But we are so busy with politics and driving revenue… those great and adventurous ideas got blocked because of that. so if I guess you are right.
