Everyone talks about how Google hires only the best and smartest people, but it currently employs almost 100k people and is a huge company worldwide. Is it really still a prestigious and sought after place to be? Edit: I have an offer and am considering joining Google Engineering.
If you have already made up your mind about the answer why ask the question
I haven’t made up my mind, I’m genuinely curious to know, although there may or may not be a straightforward answer.
100k software engineers?
Is the process for non engineering roles that rigorous?
What’s the approximate percentage of Engineering out of the 100k? (Not just software engineers, all of engineering)
That figure usually doesn’t include contractors (yellow, green or other color). Workforce is higher when including them. Yes, some of my friends joined ggl and I can tell that they’re some of the best in what they do—and they worked towards that goal. They are also super talented engineers in other companies too, except their dream is not to join ggl.
Green is intern btw
The answer is no. That prestige ended a long time ago. Sure they get lots of apps a year and still have a low percentage of conversion, but (and I’m sorry to burst any current G employees’ bubble) that does not equate to higher quality or intellect. Just take a peruse on here and you’ll see people proclaim that if you can answer LeetCode hard consistently you’ll get a job at any high tier tech companies.. how does LeetCode equate to higher level of intelligence or quality? Answer: it doesn’t. Don’t drink the koolaid. Google is just another company with normal human employees. They just happen to one of the most appealing than the others for a number of reasons. But at the end of the day it’s still a 9 to 5, and if you should work there don’t forget you’re still making someone else rich.... ... that being said, IM DESPERATELY TRYING TO GET IN!!! Give me a job Google pleeasaaseeeeee *sobbing*
I don't think anyone claims that Google engineers have a higher intellect than say Amazon or Microsoft which are similar companies in a way.
OP asked about Google being selective. That is a direct correlation to intelligence, in my opinion
There are internal hiring stats for lateral industry hires. The percentage of candidates who who work full time at Microsoft, Amazon, VMware etc and then interview and get an offer from Google is low. I guess that's what selectivity means.
What does this mean? If you’re at a competitor there’s a lower chance of moving ?
It implies that many ex-amazonians/Microsoft etc have failed to clear Google interviews.
About 50k engineers. Note: Microsoft may have similar number, but it's not usually anyone's first choice. It's after G,FB etc.
Google is definitely selective, they have that luxury. That doesn’t necessarily mean they have the brightest people.
Yup. This
I think it depends on the position right? I once met a nice lady who said she worked at Google so I was impressed. Then I found out she was an administrative assistant there. More than one job at Google. The more you know
I think their reputation is fairly deserved. Based on two things: everyone I know who works there is very solid and I interviewed there twice and didn't get in. I think of myself as low end good and the fact that they filtered me out, while quite sad, speaks well of their selection process.
With 7M applications per year, yes.
Most of which are unqualified or irrelevant.
It would be more interesting to see number of unique applicants over 5 years. Microsoft also gets millions ... Avoiding people who spam with their resume for multiple positions. Also people who fail and try again each year after year ...
