Why doesn't OpenAI offshore and reduce expense by 80%
5 YoE, mid-career ML engineer with an MS in science. Happy in my current role feel like I am both challenged to learn new things regularly and that I perform well(was just promoted again, more than doubled my TC from new grad). Have experience building and shipping ML to customers at scale. Company reimbursement can take care of cost of PhD but not sure if it will impact TC much or have any other benefits. Any thoughts?
After you finish the PhD, this field may be likely not as popular as now. Think about the situation if you started a PhD in big data four or five years ago, would that matter to have a PhD in big data now?
....yes
Some PhD tend to discourage others from pursuing. :)
Hm... I don’t know, what if AutoML catch on when you are in school?
AutoML is to an ML PhD as Wix is to a senior frontend dev at Facebook.
Love the comparison! But sometimes... all you need is just a bayesian filter or linear regression
Nah, the opportunity cost of not earning while doing the PhD is much higher than any pay gain it might bring.
Machine learning isn't quite as near to God's truth as math or physics. A physicist or mathematician can be self taught ML and if ML goes out of style, no problem, they're still valued for the purity of their knowledge. If you choose to go for a PhD, keep that in mind. In terms of TC, it can be greatly impacted if leveraged properly- this is key. At PhD level education, producing patents come as second nature since you're trained to find new things and make it happen. Those are tied to bonuses, sometimes exceeding an already high salary. I will add that this is a lot of work and a bit of pressure and feels like still being in school. I love it. High risk, high reward but not for everybody. Otherwise, only consider a PhD if you've really found something you're interested in spending all day, and I mean all day, researching.
No. 5 yoe is better than 0 yoe and phd
Not always true. Depends on how you use your time as a PhD. If you dedicate research strictly to projects that corporations can use for cash, that PhD is worth >>>20 yoe in many cases.
Every time I consider getting a PhD, the opportunity cost of over $1 mil over 4~5 years talks me out of it (my current TC is 260k). ML will be commoditized just like cloud/big data in the next few years. It's very careful with what direction you want to pursue the PhD route.
A PhD will ruin your life.
The world values people like Elizabeth Holmes, not PhDs.
Do not even think about PhD for TC.
Yeah, that’s like one of very few disciplines that an advanced degree can significantly change your value.
