I have been having the hardest time getting any responses or first round interviews at companies like Adobe, Intuit, Google, Microsoft, Cisco, etc. Is a referral pretty much necessary to get an interview at companies like those? Any tips for applying to companies where I have no source for a referral? I’ve tried the whole networking thing on LinkedIn but that’s been a bust for me also. #tech #bigtech #referral #adobe #intuit #google #microsoft
I have had better look applying than going through a referral at these companies.
Warm referral to HM > warm referral to recruiter > warm referral through referral system > cold referral > no referral
What are the differences between warm and cold? I’m sure I could guess but I’d rather not guess wrong 🥴
Warm = they know and will speak highly of your work. Cold = you’re a stranger and/or they don’t know anything about your work
At many large tech companies, referrals from anyone other than the hiring manager or someone on the immediate team mean nothing. If you can get them easily from people you don't know on Blind or Reddit, why would companies value them?
This.
That’s what I thought too, but some reviews on Google insinuated that a referral of some type was pretty much necessary.
What type of role are you looking for?
Something more on the sales side, account management, customer success, etc.
Most resumes that I read at Microsoft that are good but not great are not focused enough and/or don't differentiate themselves. Hope that helps.
This might be terrible advice, but I am hiring right now and 95% of the people applying (referrals or not) are absolutely not qualified. And I don’t mean that they could use a few more years of experience. Like they clearly didn’t read the job description and don’t have expertise in that area. I think the biggest thing you can do right now if you’re struggling to find a job is to make sure the job is a fit (not a stretch where you have to make the case).
Agreed! I try to make sure it’s at least something I’d be comfortable with, given the job description. But there are times when I shoot my shot also. It has worked in the past so I figure, why not give it a try? lol
Never had a referral, got tons of interviews. Pre-pandemic tho
So what’s your best guess as to why it’s harder post-pandemic? Is it because tech is booming as a result? Is it that many of the positions in tech are WFH or hybrid?
No!
Did not need referal at Cisco, applied on their site
Thanks!!
