Amidst all these layoffs, it’s been proving increasingly challenging to get ahead in the interview process, far less to land a role. I’m currently an Analytics Engineer [and Data Scientist by academic training]. 4+ YoE in Data Science Research, particularly Machine Learning & building end-to-end predictive models. I’ve nurtured leads at some pretty solid companies over the last month: Tesla, NVIDIA, Genentech, and a few others. But, in light of the layoffs, recruiters & hiring managers — some of which reached out to me! — literally just ghost me mid-process (for obvious reasons). Is anybody still hiring Data Scientists?? TC: 115k + 10% annual bonus (yes I know I’m severely underpaid, I needed a job quick due to circumstance).

Genentech is recruiting data scientists
I have been experiencing the same ghosting/freezing despite them having reached out to me. Worse still, I’ve noticed the hiring bar has gotten a lot higher and the interviews are a lot harder (from what I’ve heard from others who went through similar loops about 6 months ago). I’ve been getting rejected a lot more than I expected even though I thought I performed well. The reasons they give are they are looking for very specific experience and are not even willing to down level you for you to get that experience.
Crazy times 😩. Very interested to see what hiring looks like in 3-6 months.
Yeah I am hitting the business end of that trend.
