Is earning over 200k in tech @ Austin difficult?

I’m currently working in semiconductor process engineering and it seems like a lot of people around me are saying it is difficult to earn over 200k in this industry and in Austin. Considering my experience, company, and role, it makes sense. As much as I want to switch my career to tech, I’m just curious if a 200k TC in Austin is only reserved for the selected few. Any thoughts on this? What makes me happy is spending my time after work building up my projects and LCing. Thanks guys! YOE: 6 TC:🥜🥜 120k #tech #austin

As a new grad I got 4 offers in Austin for between 160k-215k TC. I did negotiate the higher end and I do think it’s rare. The 160k was also Twilio remote. The higher one was Apple but was bumped up

What roles were they?

Twilio mgitfjr Jan 18, 2022

All SWE. I interned at Twilio 2 years ago and Apple this last summer so maybe that helped with the high offer

You can easily make more than your current salary if you interview well. So many companies are fully remote or have hubs in and around Austin. It's hard to say if 200k specifically makes sense for you, but you should start interviewing and see what you can land.

Yeah I just rephrased that “makes sense” part..haven’t even got any real SW experience yet anyways. I’m not trying to be greedy, but I think there are way more opportunities in tech.

totally posible when working remotely for a big company.

Silicon Laboratories Jan 18, 2022

Not to hurt your feelings, but I think it is really hard for a process engineer to get 200k TC in Austin.

Samsung MasterTofu OP Jan 18, 2022

Nah you just sayin the truth.

Samsung MasterTofu OP Jan 18, 2022

In my company, I’m guessing at least at a staff engineer level as an IC or at least director’s level.

Meta Metamorfix Jan 18, 2022

Not difficult. My Amazon TC was 320k and Meta (remote) is 420k. But probably not the same TC level as a process eng. Maybe try moving to a tech job in your company. Also had an AMD SMTS offer for 290k last year

I think jumping ship might be a better option. I do have some friends in software departments over here, but Samsung is definitely not a good place especially for swe.

Apple uywm73 Jan 19, 2022

Meta, are you SWE?

Indeed defaanged Jan 19, 2022

In hardware, yeah, it’s hard. Become a web dev for the $$!

As a new grad? Hard. In hardware? Hard. But most companies are paying infosec 200-280k base for your current YOE… as long as your skills are relevant to their needs.

200-280 base in Austin for 6 YOE? Pls show me I’ll go there tomorrow. Don’t bullshit here.

ViacomCBS aimbot Jan 19, 2022

Lots of recruiters reaching out to me via LinkedIn with this range. TC is lower than I make now.

I was at samsung SARC in their hardware side. It’s hard to go above 200k in SARC. In any other fang level companies in austin, you’d get 200k+ easily as mid-senior. I got 200k after joining Apple with 4 yoe.

Google IamSundarP Jan 19, 2022

The 200k myth had some truth pre pandemic. But now, it’s all over the places. I’m seeing 300k senior offers for austin/remote positions. In Hardware pre silicon side (RTL/DV)

Apple jazznsex Jan 19, 2022

Those must be for 7+ yoe at least.

You could easily make more. Practice interviewing and get your resume updated. I would do it while you are still employed so there is no pressure. I ask OTE and Equity on first call so I don’t waste my time.

Not difficult in tech
