I am seeing people on Blind cribbing for base salary $150,000+. Some cribbing as they can afford $2M house but feel salary is still low. Am I the only one here not even making $100,000? Looking at everyone's post I feel I will go into depression!
These are the top incomes in tech when you cross $400k. Very few make more than $400k.
Self-selecting folks on here
I highly recommend checking Glassdoor and the IEEE Salary Survey. tl;dr is that *median* salary for engineering positions in Mtn View and SF are 168k. Caveat emptor those are the two craziest hotspots, but on the flip side that's most of FAANG. If you are making < 100k you are either fresh out of school or you are getting screwed.
Well I am based out of Tucson, Arizona
My offer from G fresh out of college was 200k+ total comp in Pittsburgh. Edit: to be clear, it did take a bunch of negotiation. The first offer they give you is a lowball
There is always someone else to look at and say “She is no better than I am but makes so much more money than I”. It’s a market economy, meaning people get paid seemingly random amounts for what seems to be the same level of effort. That’s labor market capitalism. Blind doesn’t have a lot of politicians. If it did, you’d hear them whinge about how they only make a few millions and are on only two powerful committees instead of five. You need to either get into the race for more TC with whatever you’ve got or you need to find ways to calm your mind and not go into depression. (Interesting how depression is causally used here). Meditate, move, find love , connect with your kids, become a Guru, become a DJ, become a tour guide, start a revolution. Whatever.

I think there are a lot of people in Silicon Valley who are actually depressed. The hyper-competitive environment is not good for people's well-being and what starts out as a feeling of inadequacy can easily turn into full-fledged depression if help is not sought.
People on Blind are house poor.
Take into account location as well, how much do you spend on rent? I’m paying 2.6k per month for a studio in SF, housing price here is off the chart.
Well median is 94k in san mateo country, so yes.
Yep and 1% is 2.6m. Assume at least a few percent increase on each of these per year.
Median in the tech sector or everything?
Spouse and I are both software engineers. Gross income last year was around half a million from employers plus income from real estate and other investments. BUT it was only possible because we decided not to have kids so we could spend our time on career growth and money management to build toward early retirement.
Until one of you dies early and the other one has not kids to take of them.
Sounds like you and your wife are the couple from the beginning of her movie Idiocracy.
Most of us have gold teeth and a secret handshake too
