I was laid off few months ago and just had to take time off because I’ve been going on and on for last ten years; accomplishing milestones even in the face of loss and many challenges. Recently, started applying and I feel that the gap of few months is backfiring despite my very successful academic and professional career so far. I’m being turned down from positions that I’m great fit for and the organization will really benefit from my expertise. Does being honest not work anymore in this tech industry? Do managers only fixate on the gap rather than looking at the long continuous streaks of successes a candidate has had? I don’t know how to navigate this situation. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
No
No, taking a few months break shouldn't impact the company's hiring decision
Not the final decision but it can affect you even getting an interview
That’s what I thought Walmart but what I’m seeing is exactly the thing Amazon mentioned
When you get jobs only through the front door via recruiters? Yes. When you get your job through networking and engagement? No. So new workweeks with low YoE will suffer still.
Thanks. I message hiring managers directly in addition to job application. But no success so far. Tried cold messaging recruiters but no success. Any suggestions for me?
Past 3 months: contractor, confidential under NDA Prior Job: …
Sign an NDA with your cat not to talk about your excellent care taking work ;)
I mean, they can still ask you about the work you were doing, just not specifics. Be prepared to fabricate talking points around 3 months worth of fake work
No, you didn’t get the job because of a wide variety of reasons, most likely not because of a gap in your resume.
Many people I know take FMLA as soon as they get pipped to prevent resume gap. One guy from AWS took 6 months FMLA and jumped to another company within that time
How?
He prepared for interviews, he also got a increase in his level from sde 1 to sde 2 at the new firm
I wouldn’t worry about it
I am :( I need to get back to work because I don’t want an even wider gap
Is it just me (60 years old) or are others observing a new trend with young folks taking "breaks" from the workforce? I honestly can't imagine IMMEDIATELY seeking new employment if I was laid off - and I've been fired, laid off, PIPed out, you name it - over a 38 year career, and never been out of work for more than a month, EXCEPT for 6 years to make two human beings. Making humans is NOT taking a break.
Nowadays’ youth can’t work for more than a few years straight. They call it “burnout”.
Ok, boomers!
You never know the whys. The market is really bad. For every opening they are getting hundreds of qualified and sometimes over qualified people so basically if you arent getting in the shortlist just after a role opens, its really difficult to get a call. I am searching for a change(still have a job) and it been the same experience. Roles I’m a perfect fit for and also roles I’m overqualified for, I’m getting rejects. Its a very tiring process. Having strong referrals is the only way to get in the door.
