Is it good time to join Unity technologies, assuming stock price will be 2x or 3x in next 2-3 years? #tech #unitytechnologies
Please don’t ruin your career, stay away
Pls elaborate
No it’s not. It’s getting worse as time goes by. People are burning out. The execs are mega greedy and some of our benefits were cut. Layoff after layoff after layoff. I would honestly go to another company but I can’t find anything better. The organization is such a mess. Whoever is telling you it’s a good place to be has no idea what they are talking about. It USED to be a great place to be. Personally it’s still better than my last company but it’s going downhill.
Unity has had three major RIFs in the past 8 months, re-orgs literally every six months for the past two years, with more to come, another RIF is likely coming before December, and there is so much resulting chaos that pretty much every org in the company is totally flailing. Until top leadership is replaced, I would avoid it like the plague. It’s a total disaster. Oh and the Apple thing won’t change anything. They are so incapable of successfully delivering projects, I’d be surprised if anything comes from that at all.
It isn’t. And it is. The place is looking to cut. Depends on what you do. If you’re some generic webdev or you have no experience with runtime then please stay away. We don’t need you. This also applies if you’re one of those web3 jackasses.
I mean sorta? They’re cutting a lot of the benefits, forcing RTO, internal moral is shot after the last RIF. If they’re offering you decent stock options and a good TC I wouldn’t tell you to not work here. My boss and coworkers are all some of the best people I’ve ever met. Just be prepared to work with some jaded people depending on the position. Iron source and epic aren’t really concerns that I think should influence your decision either tbh but obviously I’m a biased guy.
Joined a year ago and got RIF’d a year later, like another commenter said, wait until the CEO gets canned or just take something else. Watching 3 RIFs in 8 months did nothing good for my mental
Nope. Stay away. There are better places to work that have better TC and better leadership. Join when there’s a new CEO… take as a lesson EA’s history.
Avoid .. red flag .. Know Guys who took up a job and lob dissolved in a week’s time.. they were let go without severance ..
Yes it is. They pretty much have a monopoly on gaming production platform. Think AWS for Gaming dev. And with Apple VR bringing them onboard as partner to build Vision pro apps, their platform usage will take off big time
Big question mark on whether Vision pro will have any real impact on Unity subscriptions.
That monopoly is only sorta true for mobile. For any meaningful game by CCU/MAU in the AAA and AA segment Unreal or proprietary engines are the standard. Meanwhile in the indie space Godot is starting to nibble away at Unity's lunch because Unity is doing a terrible job at maintaining and improving the engine as can be easily proven by visiting Unity communities or YouTube. Meanwhile JR is just unsuccessfully chasing fad after fad with AI (killed and entirely laid off last year right before the AI boom) NFT, Web3, consumer products, metaverse and now back at AI (the only thing Unity has in this area is a hastily made GDC trailer and a bootstrapped tech demo made by a developer advocate). The ads business was getting in serious trouble and had to be bailed out via the Iron source acquisition. Do you also want me to get into the slew of other failed acquisitions and integrations because get ready for a novel. Meanwhile morale is in the gutter after 3 rounds of mass layoffs in 1 year with more coming. Leadership is grossly overpaid and stacked with sycophants and cronies and have no trust anymore whatsoever and are openly mocked. Of most that are still there I know they are practicing leetcode and interviewing. Whether Apple 's vision pro is gonna take off remains to be seen and any significant adoption and marketshare will take much longer before it materializes in any meaningful impact on Unity 's baseline. Stay away.
