People who work at places like: Yahoo, AOL/Verizon, Macy’s, IBM What is morale like...? what are the projects like? Do you think it’s any different, more or less taxing, than working at a growing or floating company?
I think the work is truly interesting and fun sometimes. The companies just have no clue how to manage or make software sustainably. Beancounters making most decisions, not smart people.
Oh boy. I moved to FAANG recently.
Varies a lot by team and by how safe you are from layoffs. Young high performers have very little fear of layoffs. When I was at IBM I was on a team working on pretty new tech so it was really fun and everyone on the team was really invested in the work.
Technically Apple is a dinosaur company the key difference is they've moved with the times.
Wow I didn't realize Apple was from the 70s. I think that makes Macy's and IBM as old as rocks not dinosaurs then :D (Macy's over 150 yrs, IBM over 100 yrs old)
Depends on your definition I suppose. Either way it's not exactly a startup, existed before the internet and has been around longer than most people working there have been alive. By anyone's measure it's one of if not the most innovative companies out there
Less pressure than working at startups or big tech. People coast with 30 hrs week. Projects are not as complex or interesting as Big tech. Low TC, fear of layoffs whenever there is change in mgmt at the exec level. Promos depend on kissing ass and not on merit. Benefits suck big time.
Why apple need thousands of engineers when camera is the only upgrade in every new IPhone ? What is morale like ? What are the projects like ?
People also work on MacOS upgrades. Mac OS Big Sur has rounder icons. Most of the engineers’ time went into grinding the edges of icons to make them round.
Well you forgot to include Oracle (non-OCI) in your list, therein the culture is just hazardous. @OP
Ignorant ^ Both Oracle Applications and Infrastructure are great exciting places to work full of smart talent Oracle Advertising (data cloud) for example has great TC and work.
You don’t get much more dinosaur than cable companies. Technologically it sucks - there’s no interest in doing anything advanced or interesting work, at least here. Comcast had an R&D group a while back but sacked nearly all of them. Most cable companies just follow whatever Comcast does and save needing actual engineering groups. From a job security perspective it’s fine as long as you’re not in operations here. In non-ops it seems like it’s impossible to get fired - you can sit back and coast for years. Ops you get written up for everything - it makes the stories of Amazon’s pip culture look pleasant in comparison.
What is your impression of Verizon that would make you include in a list of “dying or dinosaur companies “?

Tech companies to avoid as a white guy?
Not as depressing as FB.
FB is dead in US but growing in the third world right? Is that exciting in anyway? What about IG?
Exciting? No.
