Title don't mean anything at small company. Is it worth it to get a title promotion by joining a small company? Specifically, the new position is a manager position with direct reporting. Never done that before. My current job is a senior IC with relatively stable outlook. Edit: new company is series B with pretty terrible Glassdoor review.
Wouldn't that be switching for a role change? Being a manager after IC isn't title inflation, that's a literal change in responsibilities. If you want to go into management, this is probably a good opportunity. If not, I don't see why you would take it. I don't think there's any "inflation" here.
Good points. The way I calculated it, management is a natural progression after doing IC for a long time. So that's why I say it was title inflation as management is a extension of senior IC.
I think "for the title" is selling this opportunity short. You're moving "to break into management". If you don't see a path to management in the next 6-12 montns and you think you could really enjoy it then I'd strongly consider it! Maybe not at a series A but if you're talking B or later I'd probs go for it. Depends when AA will IPO though & all the financials involved.
Thanks for the reply. It's a series B startup with pretty terrible Glassdoor review.
Titles don't pay the bills.
If you're doing it to then move to FAANG or the like companies with the same big title, you'll probably get downleveled. People coming from VP and Director titles getting M1 roles in FAANG.
I don't think that's a bad thing. That's just the expectation.
Title inflation doesn't mean shit, you'll just get down leveled somewhere else
This isn't title inflation! It's a different job!
The way I see it, management is the natural progression from senior IC.
You might see it that way, but again, it's not inflation. Inflation implies that you're doing the same work for a bigger title. In this case, the work would be completely different than what you're doing now. The title matches the job.
Better wrong experience than no experience?
Why not transition to manager at current company?
No change to be promoted
Apply for other companies maybe. If you are worried you can always keep interviewing. Give yourself 3-6 months King! If you like can give referrals
Everyone is a VP at a bank, they typically come over to Microsoft at L63-L65. Title inflation doesn’t always net you what you want.
How small is the company? Cuz you can create a new company with 1k call your self Technoking but wouldn't mean much.
