My ultimate goal was always to make it to a FAANG company after I graduate. But lately I’ve been contemplating if it is worth it from a COL/ QOL standpoint. I currently live in florida and there are two companies here in SOFLO that start you off at 100-110k even though the work isn’t as meaningful, and after plugging the TCS from FAANG new grads on salary comparison calculators, it’s almost the same or even less than here in florida and not to mention other states with better tech hubs. I have been in contact with some recruiters and have done mock interviews with engineers at these Big N companies and I am fairly confident that I can land a job at one before I graduate. I know that the growth opportunities at FAANG are incomparable to none, but is it worth it to make all that money and still have to limit yourself because of the housing cost and high taxes vs. making less at a lesser tech hub and being able to afford more? #amazon #twitter #google #facebook #Netflix #apple #uber #microsoft #lyft
I was making about 85k TC back in 2014 in a low fortune 500 company in a low COL city. I had a 2000sq SFH with good school district ok car but decided that I want to move to bay area and work in a FAANG one day. Fast forward today, I am at my 2nd FAANG today making over 450kTC. I have no house as of today, because even with 2M budget I had to pick between short commute, good school, large house. I can only pick one of the 3, and I refused to be house poor to pick between these shitty house and cities. Compare to my old coworkers today, they have 3000sqft house, live close to work, drive a fully loaded Tesla. They get to do that with about 1/3 of my TC. They don't have 2+M networth like I do but they sure seems way happier than I am. This year is the year I said fuck the rat race, and will be moving back and buy the biggest house I can afford.
But if you want to move back to the low CoL city now, you'll be much wealthier than those ex-coworkers. They don't have a choice.
That’s exactly my point, a luxury waterfront apartment walking distance from the beach costs 1600/month in north fort lauderdale.
Yes. But I'd also leave Florida regardless.
I agree. Florida is tech-less, there’s definitely better tech hubs out there like Austin, Raleigh, Minneapolis, Boston, maybe even Virginia? I wish I could work for a FAANG in a Low COL and the only option seems like amazon with offices in VA and Minneapolis.
Or faang in any low col city you choose but ultimately there's a reason why low col areas are low cost...
If you really want to work for FAANG in low cost living area, why even live in the US? plenty of offices in Canada Europe
Lol, in Europe you will get 🥜 even in FAANG, but still pay a lot for living, taxes, etc
I think you'll learn so much at fang that it's worth going, you can always come back with your experience and crush your normal job
Nope.
Could you try a company that allows full remote work? Your TC will be adjusted for COL but it will still be higher. Twitter, Square, Netflix, Hubspot, Salesforce, etc.
If you're chasing an American dream (house/yard/cars/Walmart), then probably stay. If you value things other than cheap gas, Olive Garden, maga, and mass shootings, then probably a more forward-thinking city will suit better.
FB also allows and hires for full-remote for E5+
Dropping this to E4 soon!

How much $ do you save per year in Florida?
Well i don’t save any bc I have no income, but I’m sure that someone that works at Citrix in Ft Lauderdale saves a lot less than a FAANG Engineer, but with a better QOL maybe?
Best option for QoL is probably a remote job at Microsoft or Salesforce with healthy WLB while living in a low CoL area
