So last summer I interned at Amazon, and it was clear from the beginning that my manager really didn't like me. Surprisingly, despite mostly getting negative feedback in my end-of-internship meeting with my manager, I walked away with a return offer. Now, about 2 months ago I came back to my team as a full-timer, and the tasks I've been getting are 100% HTML/CSS/JavaScript tasks. I don't get to pick tasks, they are assigned to me by my manager. I'm an SDE who has no background in frontend -- and my team does have actual FEEs working on it -- so I don't know why I keep getting assigned these tasks, as I feel not very productive on them, or at least not nearly productive as actual frontend engineers. They also feel like really simple tasks, which worries me because I know this could ding me in terms of the Dive Deep and other leadership principles. Another thing about these tasks is that I'm constantly getting updated UI mocks from designers that make me change previous work I've already completed which is really frustrating. Is my manager purposely trying to fuck me over and get me PIPed by having me do this shit? Is that why she made me an HTML monkey? If she really disliked me that much in the first place, why didn't she just not give me a return offer in the first place? I bring up these concerns to my manager and she just point blank says "And I'm gonna assign you more frontend tasks next sprint too" with no explanation of why -- It's a little worrisome how openly aggressive she is. This is my first post on Blind btw. I literally made an account to ask this question. Please let me know your thoughts guys. Am I gonna be okay? #amazon #pip
Prepare to leave.
Sounds like a bad manager, but as a new grad, you really don’t have much choice but to dig in and try to prove your worth. If you do that for 9-12 months and your manager is still acting this way, I would quietly look into ways to exit the situation.
This makes me feel a little better. Do you know how long it takes to get PIP'd at amazon?
I just got PIP’d. My tenure as of today is 9 months
Yes
My advice is talk to your manager and share your concerns and ask for his or her honest feedback on your performance
Move quick
Change team asap.
Why specifically? Also any tips for switching teams?
1) you seem unhappy with your work. 2) Peace of mind. Quite stressful to keep second guessing if you're in pip/dev-list. Tip: 1) Always get a verbal offer before applying for transfer on job portal. Transfer should be easy. Since you're just two months in will be hard for your manager to retaliate/block your move. 2) Once you have offer, do not fall for the sweet talk, asking you to not transfer and promise of better work. She'll definitely fuck you over later and no one will care.
This is the part where you are broken down; your manager will then reassemble you based on her desires. It's part of the process at Amazon (and many other companies). Play along.
Ha ha ha 😉😉
Indian manager? Just curious 🤔

You are a fresh grad new hire and you are expecting you can choose to work in any assignment?
No I'm not expecting to be able to pick whatever I want to work on, of course not. I'm just paranoid my manager is giving me these UX tasks with constantly changing deliverables to try to set me up to fail
Never ascribe to malice what can be explained with incompetence, your manager is likely an unorganized idiot who is skilled at managing up and terrible at managing down.
