To start off, I’m no fan of whatsapp, I deleted whatsapp years ago (to the distress of my extended family who have a large group chat on whatsapp) Facebook has owned WhatApps for a while so they could have just accessed the data anyway. Isn’t whatsapp “feeding” data to facebook just the backend micro services of facebook and whatsapp talking through APIs / maybe even a data migration of the two platforms into one? Non technical people are just over reacting to this not really understanding whats going on.
No. Without network effects FB entities would get destroyed by actually having to compete and not stalk me and shove ads in my face every 3rd post
There is no reason to trust Facebook. Give me one!
Signal is better anyway, I'm glad there's finally an excuse for people to switch
From my understanding all it was doing was allowing your facebook account to login and use whatsapp. Private conversations and whatsapp accounts were unaffected and no data was being collected. Even FB accounts never synced private conversations. Stupid people panic and start spewing nonsense online without reading the details. overblown.
you’re right. WA private chat stays private. WA uses signal’s protocol so it has same security unless it connects to other service, such business then it acts as email inbox. WA comm team just shoot their foot with crazy TOS writing.
@BMzA22, as an investor I am curious what those comm team doing now. Any plan to re notify people with better comm?
I would like to hear opinion of Facebook engineers on this. What do they plan to do?
zuck’s plan to split unmonetizable users out thus decrease ops cost. and doing so make FB harder to be dissolved by antitrust lawsuit. you guys are playing into his game loss a battle to win a war. not a leak, just my own speculation when I not ware FB employee hat
As far as social media/messaging we need to develop and push for decentralized and friendly platforms. For the internet we need to turn it into a utility through net neutrality and include cloud infrastructure as well.
not overblown
underblown as most dont care when they should as this is a slippery slope. FB can in future share it, this was just dip stick test.
Most people couldn't care less about privacy & hardly know anything about it. This is just another trend & the herd follows without any logic!!
WhatsApp tried to do what you did with this poll. The same way you didn’t give “It’s not overblown” as an option but just added other, WhatsApp tried to give “We will use your data” and “Other” as options. And people chose “Other”
