Ex-Googlers: where did you go, and are you happier there?
Pressing buttons on a web page doesn't feel like "backend" development to me. Maybe more like devops Are real backend engineers supposed to be impressed by a million new grads with recipe book web apps with a very basic "Python (or) Ruby API" using "HTTP get requests" and "modular React frontend" hosted on AWS where everything is managed by AWS? #amazon #google #facebook #apple #microsoft
Have you ever even used a computer? This is just ignorant sounding. Operations isn't backend development cloud hosted or otherwise.
Most of these tech unicorns that are now doing $10B+ IPOs were built in exactly the way you describe.
Gatekeeping to the max
Poll is a false dichotomy. Nobody cares about your crappy school app. Back end is by definition what happens after you click that button. Is back end an API, are you doing forms processing (eww)? Have you used CICD for your infrastructure? what about deployment of new code and maintenance? What about security, are you authenticating your own users, or federating with SSO? Doing SSL termination or hosting the cert yourself? Is your backend SOA, micro services, monolithic or something else? How about database sharding, caching? are you using sql or nosql? Is this a legacy app? If so it’s Garunteed to have stored procedures, what are your opinions on those? How about cloud functions/lambda , are they useful for your back end? Don’t worry with time you will understand the subtle complexity of making hard things look easy. In the real world we get the job done by any means necessary. If that is low code so be it. If something needs to be rewritten from scratch it gets done. Results are the only thing that impresses.
